Battlefield 1 Beta Impressions & Screenshots – Is it good?

Battlefield 1 is the upcoming major installment in the Battlefield series. It is going to be the successor of Battlefield 4 & Battlefield Hardline. Battlefield 1 is set in the era of WW1, with classic weapons, vehicles, and airplanes. Well, the Battlefield 1 Beta just dropped, and here are our impressions on it.

Reviving System:

After playing Battlefield 1, we can safely say that the game is a lot different than any other Battlefield game we’ve ever seen. Unlike Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 3, you cannot spam the defibrillator. The reviving system of Battlefield 1 is like the good old Battlefield 2. You need to request a revive. After requesting a revive, your teammates will know that you’re down and they’ll be able to revive you. If you don’t call for a revive, your teammates won’t know where you are.

Dynamic Weather System:

The dynamic weather system has a drastic impact on the gameplay of Battlefield 1. You’ll need to alter your strategies in different weather conditions.

PC Optimization:

Battlefield 1’s optimization on PC is great. Our friends over at Gaming Info were able to play the beta on a PC with an i7 3770k, 16GB RAM and a GTX 970 4GB on ultra settings and they’re getting stable 60 FPS (DirectX 12).

Graphics:

In a nutshell, Battlefield 1 looks gorgeous. The graphics and the sound effects are just amazing. The sound of the guns are also natural and the overall sense of war in the game just makes it so much fun. The HUD looks great too. Graphically, we have no complaints from BF1.

Vehicle Gameplay:

The tank gameplay of Battlefield 1 is drastically different from its predecessors. The movement of the tank is slow. But well, to be honest, the light tank is quite overpowered. It just wrecks almost everything in its path. Also, destroying a tank alone is pretty hard. You need some teamwork to counter enemy tanks. The transport vehicles are great too but they’re not so fast. And yes, the horses are fun too!

Weapons Gameplay:

The weapons are exactly what we expected. Personally, I really loved playing with bolt-action weapons. In the conquest map, the snipers do have a slight edge. The map is completely open at some spots and you can get instantly killed by a sniper.

Airplane Gameplay:

Flying around in airplanes is a lot of fun. The damage system of airplanes is nicely balanced. The dogfighting is interesting too and the thing we liked the most is the gunner spot on the airplane. And yes, repairing your airplane is a double-edged sword. You can crash while doing so.

Minimap & Spotting System:

The minimap is severely changed from the previous Battlefield games. In previous BF games, if you shoot your weapon (without a suppressor), you will be visible on the minimap. But in Battlefield 1, you won’t be visible in the minimap if you shoot. You will only be visible in the minimap if you’re spotted by an enemy player. This makes “camping” way too easy.

However, the spot-time is reduced too. Spotting an enemy player is easy but still, we don’t like this new minimap mechanic.

Conclusion:

Overall, we’re satisfied with the Battlefield 1 Beta. However, there are some things that we really don’t like about the game. The ticket system is missing and I, personally, really want it back badly. The large conquest map needs some more spots for cover and we want the old spotting system back again. But still, despite a few hiccups, we’re still satisfied with the Battlefield 1 beta. It’s really fun. And yeah, this is still the beta version and we expect EA to check the feedback of the players and make the final version of Battlefield 1 perfect.

Battlefield 1 will launch worldwide on October 21, 2016, on PC, PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. For more articles like this, stay tuned to GeeksULTD and also, give our friends over at Gaming Info a check.

  1. Beautiful game overall. Maxed out DX12 on a 1080 on a good PC is visual treat. Two things that stood out for me are the aircraft and horse riding. Very well implemented and balanced. I also like that tankers get their own loadouts.

Beyond that, I was just a bullet sponge, padding elite players scores. Killed on spawn – killed after spawning on a team mate. Shoveled and bayoneted more times than I care to say. I spent 95% of my time as a medic trying to heal myself.

The changes they made will only make people who were stand out players in previous Battlefield games ever more god like. Throw in a few clans and the spawn/loadout screen will be burnt into you retina.

EA/Dice still hasn’t figured out a method for Team Balancing. Match after Lopsided Match, people start to drop off. One’s Level is not indicative of one’s SKILL. Kill/Death ratio per round is a lot more telling – Moving some high rate killers around would go a long way to balancing teams between rounds.

  2. Same old BF game, new skin. BTW, individual carried automatic weapons were not in the hands of pretty much every soldier in WW1, bolt action was the call of the day, DICE seems to have missed that fact.
