FIFA 17 Demo First Impressions, Gameplay and Screenshots – Yay or Nay?

Built on the Frostbite Engine, FIFA 17 features improved graphics, gameplay and effects. For the first time, FIFA 17 also has a story mode called “The Journey” in which you play as Alex Hunter, a young star making his debut in football. FIFA 17 was shown at E3 2016. The game also features real-life managers. FIFA 17 demo just came out, and here are our impressions on it.

FIFA 17 Demo First Impressions, Gameplay and Screenshots – Yay or Nay?

Graphics:

FIFA 17 is powered by EA’s Frostbite engine, the same game engine that is used in games like Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline. FIFA 17 has much better graphics than FIFA 16. The animations are improved too. The shirts of players seem much more detailed and realistic now.

The facial expressions of players also look great. But there are some bugs. During goal celebrations, we saw little glitches like hands of players glitching into other players. The graphics are improved, but they’re not that good, just better than FIFA 16 – nothing too fancy.

A huge bug/glitch:

Well, the game is great and all, but this bug/glitch is a really bad one. In a match, I chose FC Bayern Munich versus Manchester United F.C. But a really weird thing happened. The squad was of FC Bayern Munich but the game was displaying “Sounders FC” instead of FC Bayern Munich.

That’s not Sounders FC.

That’s not it. I played FC Bayern Munich versus Manchester United, but another weird thing that happened is that the players of Manchester United were wearing the kit of Juventus F.C.

Wait, Zlatan Ibrahimović doesn’t play for Juventus!

This is definitely bad but we expect this to be fixed in the final version.

Gameplay:

The gameplay of FIFA 17 is highly different from FIFA 16. The game seems a bit more fast-paced and the passing mechanics are now quite realistic. Also, FIFA 17 is less dependent on skill moves, unlike FIFA 16. The AI is much better now. Other players move and make positions to create chances. The corners are improved too. Now you get a little icon which indicates where the ball is going to land while taking a corner. Long-shots are much more realistic now too. With a good player, you can score goals from outside the D easily. The ball-roll also seems a bit fast now. The CPU is a bit more difficult to beat now, IMO. Like when the CPU is attacking, they’re pretty much unpredictable.

Freekicks feel pretty much the same as FIFA 16, but penalties are massively different from the predecessor. In FIFA 17, you have to first position the penalty-taker manually and then hold the left analog to make the run then slightly move the left analog to aim and at the same time power up using the shoot button. It may sound simple but believe me, it is pretty difficult. You will get used to it but it is a bit of a learning curve moving from FIFA 16.

The gameplay of FIFA 17 is not perfect, but it is great, slightly better than FIFA 16. But it is definitely a step forward. Everything is improved in a good way.

Gameplay Video:

Captured on PC. Actual match starts at 4:46.

The Journey:

For the first time, FIFA 17 now features a story mode, called The Journey. In the demo, we got to play just a glimpse of it and we really liked it. “The Journey” features young football player named Alex Hunter. Alex is making his debut in the world of football. In the starting, he plays for Manchester United. This mode is awesome and it is a great addition to a FIFA game. It is full of emotions and after playing the demo, I must say, it is quite promising.

PC Optimization:

FIFA 17 Demo #14

The optimization of FIFA 17 on PC is great. We did not encounter any performance-related problems or issues. The game works perfectly fine. On a PC with an Intel Core i7 2600K at 4.5GHz OC, 16GB RAM and MSI Radeon R9 390X 8GB, we were able to max out the game at 1440p resolution and we were getting around 200FPS. We did test it out on a PC with a budget graphics card too. On a PC with Intel Core i7-4790, 16GB RAM and AMD Radeon R9 270X, we were able to max out FIFA 17 with more than 60FPS at 1080p. So yeah, the optimization is top-notch.

Conclusion:

FIFA 17 Demo First Impressions, Gameplay and Screenshots - Yay or Nay?

FIFA 17 is awesome, but it is not perfect. There are some things in the gameplay that EA still has not fixed, like not-so-good physics, jittery moves of CPU players, etc. The few bugs that we encountered will hopefully be fixed in the final version of the game. Overall, the demo gave us a good impression of FIFA 17. However, we still cannot say if the game is good for sure. There is a controversy going on about the unfair ratings of players in FIFA 17. We will know whether the game is good or bad once we get to play the final version which will arrive on September 27, 2016. And by the way, I personally don’t like Marco Reus on the main cover of the game (no offense). Other players like Neymar Jr., Gareth Bale, or Antoine Griezmann would’ve been better as compared to Reus.
