Elden Ring, a freshly published game by FromSoftware, has reached a significant milestone in less than three weeks. As of March 14, 2022, only 17 days after its debut, the open-world game has sold an astounding 12 million copies across all platforms and territories.
Elden Ring has sold 1 million copies in Japan and 11 million copies outside the nation, bringing the total sales to 12 million copies globally, according to a press statement on FromSoftware’s official website.
Elden Ring takes the traditional “Souls formula” and makes the move to an open world, with a setting authored by George R. R. Martin, and has been highly lauded from all throughout the gaming world, presently sitting at a 96 on Metacritic.
“It’s incredible to see how many people have been playing Elden Ring. “On behalf of the whole development team, I’d want to express our profound gratitude,” stated Hidetaka Miyazaki, President and CEO/Director of FromSoftware.

“Elden Ring is based on George R. R. Martin’s mythical narrative.” We hope that players feel a sense of freedom when wandering around its enormous globe, finding its many mysteries, and confronting its many enemies.
Thank you for your continuous support.” Yasuo Miyakawa, President and CEO of the game’s publisher, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc., also commented on the game’s success, saying:
Elden Ring, a new action RPG created in collaboration with FromSoftware and BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, has sold over 12 million units worldwide. I’d want to take this time to thank all of our fans for bringing Elden Ring into their gaming lives.
I am extremely delighted to have been a part of bringing such a magnificent and spectacular game to life alongside FromSoftware, Director Miyazaki, and George R. R. Martin. ‘Elden Ring’ was created with great care in order to fulfill the expectations of our admirers all around the world.
In the same way, we will continue to work to extend the brand’s reach beyond the game and into everyone’s daily lives.
The section of Miyakawa’s comment about “growing the brand outside the game itself” is particularly notable.
Along with these statements, the press release confirmed that more media from outside of video games will take place within the Lands Between, saying, “Please look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP (characters and other intellectual property) in the hopes of expanding beyond the realm of games.”
This is not the first time FromSoftware has ventured outside of the video gaming genre to explore the worlds of their games, with Bloodborne receiving numerous comic books and a brand-new comic set to release on May 7, 2022.
With these official figures, Elden Ring FromSoftware is easily the most successful title of all time. To put this in context, their previous best-selling game was Dark Souls 3, which sold 10 million copies as of 2020.
Elden Ring was able to surpass this milestone in a matter of weeks, and with that success, it’s no wonder that both FromSoftware and BANDAI NAMCO want to continue exploring the potential with their new brand.
Elden Ring is now available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. There are currently no Elden Ring spin-offs or expansions announced, however, it has been stated that they will be released in the future.
