The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is almost certainly on the way – there’s no reason to expect the firm would stop producing smartwatches just yet – but it’s still too early to hear many leaks or speculations.
That’s why this post focuses on what we hope to see in the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, rather than what we already know.
We found the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to be two of the greatest, but also some of the most disappointing, wearables of 2021 when we evaluated them.

These gadgets offered a whole new operating system, combining the best of Tizen and Wear OS, all driven by a fast new processor and a slew of new health-tracking features. And they mostly delivered on that, but with a few limitations and difficulties.
So, for the unavoidable Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (and maybe the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Classic), we’d want to see a few adjustments, the most important of which we’ve mentioned below.
We’ve also looked at when Samsung’s next flagship wearable is expected to be released, how much it may cost, and gathered some early rumors about it. As further leaks come, we’ll add them to this post as well, ensuring that this remains the definitive source of Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 information ahead of its release.
Release date and pricing of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
According to a leaked release timetable discovered by South Korean blog The Elec, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will be released somewhere in the second half of 2022, which is not surprising given that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series was released in August of 2021.
In reality, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 was released in August of 2020, thus August of 2022 is our best bet for when the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will be released.
There is currently no word on how much it will cost, but the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 starts at $249.99 / £249 / AU$399(increasing in price for bigger size or LTE connection), but the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic starts at $349 / £349 / $549, suggesting that the next iteration will be priced similarly.
Leaks and news
We haven’t heard much about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, but one early rumor implies that it may get a battery upgrade.
According to regulatory filings for batteries expected to be in the next smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch 5’s battery is 276mAh (up from 247mAh in the Galaxy Watch 4), while the Galaxy Watch 5 Classic’s seems to be 397mAh (up from 361mAh in its predecessor).
So those aren’t huge leaps, but they may make a difference. It’s worth noting that those appear to be the initial battery sizes; if there are different watch sizes, we’ll most likely see bigger batteries in some of them as well.
There have lately been speculations about a Pro version of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 with a larger battery capacity of 572mAh. This is going to have a significant influence on battery life.
Aside from that, we’ve seen a Samsung patent for a wristwatch with an extensible screen that can expand by 40% when a pinch motion is employed. The same patent also depicts a camera built into the watch.
The photos below show how this could appear, but keep in mind that patents aren’t always used, and even if this design does one day make it into a wearable, we doubt it will be available in time for the Galaxy Watch 5.
