The Director of Moon Knight Explains Why the Show Is Avoiding MCU Connections!

Moon Knight, Marvel Studios’ most recent Disney+ series, is now being enjoyed by fans all around the world.

The Oscar Isaac-led program follows the eponymous character as he struggles with Dissociative Identity Disorder while also grappling with the reality that he is the Avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian God of the Moon. This project, however, differs from the rest of the MCU in one important way: it is entirely self-contained.

For many viewers, such a characteristic is one of the show’s most appealing features. There are no appearances from other MCU characters, no connections to larger world events (like the catastrophe at the Statue of Liberty), and no need for prior knowledge—audiences can jump right in and know everything they need to know.

It’s an intriguing component that is rarely seen in Marvel’s endeavors, for better or ill. Even the current Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which established a new universe, included several parallels to Doctor Strange’s realm, such as Wong’s involvement.

But why is the project so cut off from the rest of the MCU? Thankfully, one of the series’ directors is on hand to address that question.

Moon Knight director Aaron Moorhead discussed why the series was chosen to remain somewhat unrelated to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with Digital Spy ahead of the official release of the Disney+ program.

According to him, the hero’s ability to stand alone as a character “was one of the cornerstones of accomplishing this entire project,” and because “no expectations were placed on him… the project could be anything:”

“One of the cornerstones of undertaking this entire endeavor was making sure that Moon Knight could stand alone as a character. Grant [Curtis], our executive producer, and Mohamed [Diab], the other director and EP, were all saying.

‘ When asked why the character appeals to Moorhead, the filmmaker cited Moon Knight’s status as an “outsider”: “He’s an outsider, and he’s not like the rest of the cosmos. And it was because of this that we were able to take some extraordinary chances with it.”

When asked about his experience joining the Marvel Studios family, the director said that “everyone was on the same page about wanting to depict an Indiana Jones-esque adventure:”

Hopefully, fans are taking advantage of the series’ disconnection as much as they can right now because it won’t last long. It’s a lot easier to pull off for a character’s origin tale, but the longer Moon Knight remains in the MCU, the more difficult it will be to believe he hasn’t met anyone—especially the Sorcerer Supreme.

The character has a lot of potential to link with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shortly.

Taika Waititi’s forthcoming feature Thor: Love and Thunder, for example, could easily connect to Moon Knight. After all, the villain of the story is known as Gorr the God Butcher, therefore Khonshu’s involvement in the plot seems likely.
