Imagine inviting yourself to an apartment your mind had created. The Girl and the Spider is a film about two identical twins, one of which becomes convinced that she’s being followed by malicious arachnids in her home. It may not seem like much on paper but when you watch this movie everything will start making sense—and then some!
When Lisa moves into her place, she invites over a few friends for a farewell party that night. The group decides to stay at the old address so they can say goodbye properly in front of all their memories together–and it just so happens there is still someone living on the top floor!
Mara has been helping out with chores around town since before moving into these apartments but tonight will be different; Her mission: To help carry boxes up three flights…
Friendship is a double-edged sword. It can slice you up and leave your heart in pieces or it could be the one thing that saves you from yourself, but there will always come a time when their relationship reaches its boiling point before they finally decide on which side of life’s blade to land forevermore…
The Zürchers have confounded convention with their film. Ramon is credited as director, but it’s a joint effort between them; they seem to share equal responsibility for every aspect of production from writing the script down to filming an editing cycle or two to make sure everything bucks expectations – including how Mara professes she can “lie without batting eyelid.”
The movie is full of unpredictable moments. Camera lenses fixate on odd details, cuts react to offscreen noises and dialogue (the clamorous sound design feels just as out there), flashbacks appear without warning in between scenes that take place decades ago–it can be hard for viewers who have no idea what’s coming next! But this all comes together beautifully thanks largely due to an unforgettable tune from across the pond: “Voyage Voyage.”
The movie opens with an intense shot of the plan that Mara has made for Lisa, and then we see her notes on how to navigate through this tangle. It’s different every time you watch because there are so many layers-a suggestions are given but it doesn’t tell viewers everything they need; ultimately what matters most about these characters’ stories became clear during my second viewing when I finally clue in on who might be behind all those little hints!
