If you are someone who loves vintage dresses and want to add them to your collection then you can consider going to an auction. Recently, It was declared that Judy Garland’s Wizard of Oz dress will be up for auction. So In today’s article let’s talk about this vintage dress.
In a 1939 classic film, named The Wizard of Oz Judy Garland wore a blue Gingham pinafore dress as Dorothy. You can see this dress during the witch castle scene. There the wicked witch threatened the red shoe-wearing little girl Dorothy. The witch is played by Margaret Hamilton.
Now the dress will be put for auction by the Catholic University of America(CUA) in Washington D.C to raise funds for Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, Drama, and Art. The University is excepting that this dress will be sold for around $800,000 to $1.2 million. We hope that the dress sells in this figure because the dress has highly historical values.
In 1970 the Hollywood actress Mercedes McCambridge gifted this dress to the head of drama, Rev. Gilbert. At that time she was living in the drama department so that’s why she gifted that dress to the department. Though it’s uncertain how she got the possession of that dress. But during 1980 the university lost the dress.
They tried to look for the dress everywhere but failed to find it. However, in June 2021 Matt Ripa found this dress in his office.
He is a retired drama professor. During his time at the university, he searched everywhere but couldn’t find the dress. But when he was cleaning his office for renovation, he found a box of office mail. There he found a short message from a retired drama professor Thomas Donahue. The message wrote “I found this in my office” and the dress was underneath the letter.
If you want to witness the dress then you can go to the university because it will be displayed to the public from April 21- to April 27. After that, the dress will be transferred to Los Angels for the auction. There the auction will be held on May 24th. Bonhams will hold the auction for this dress.
The dress is unique because this blue pinafore dress has a “handkerchief pocket”. The dress is fitted with a bodice and a full skirt. The dress has the tag Judy Garland 4223. In 2015, another Judy Garland dress was sold for $1.5 million at a Bonhams auction.
