Even though HBO’s highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has yet to premiere, the network is already planning a second season. Casey Bloys, HBO/HBO Max chief content officer, told Variety that another season of the show would be a “very strong bet” if HBO approved it.

Showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Condal are also executive producers, with Martin, Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis, and Ron Schmidt.

“I believe it’s definitely a pretty good bet if you’re wagering on whether we’ll do a second season,” Bloys remarked. “In general, we let things broadcast and see how it goes, but we’ll obviously make preparations ahead of time to ensure we’re ahead of the game.”

The only information available about the impending House of the Dragon is that it would depict the story of the Targaryens, who conquered and unified the land of Westeros prior to the events of Game of Thrones.

Sapochnik received Emmy and DGA awards for “Battle of the Bastards,” which he directed six times for Game of Thrones. In 2019, he was nominated for another Emmy for directing “The Long Night,” and as an executive producer for the final season, he won the Emmy for Best Drama Series.

House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and tells the story of the Targaryens, the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria. It will take place 300 years before the events of the award-winning Game of Thrones television series, which ended nearly two years ago.

Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D’Arcy will star as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the 10-episode series. Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Graham McTavish, Ryan Corr, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Matthew Needham, Bill Patterson, Gavin Spokes, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Savannah Steyn, and Theo Nate will all appear in the film.

The series is also directed by Clare Kilner (The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, The Wedding Date) and Geeta Vasant Patel (Meet the Patels, The Witcher). Director and co-executive producer Greg Yaitanes (Banshee, House) is on board.
