The Epic Game Store’s annual “Mega Sale” began this week, and there are now a large number of titles on sale, as the name implies. While a number of games are available for a low price, Epic plans to give away a couple of titles for free. The first is Gearbox’s Borderlands 3, which is accessible for absolutely nothing.
When a “Mystery Game” is teased, as we said last week in our ongoing list of every free game at Epic, it’s always a huge one. That rule applies to the latest surprise gift as well. Anyone with a free Epic Games account can get Borderlands 3 for the next week. Gearbox’s loot shooter is yours to keep indefinitely once it’s in your library. Borderlands 3 is the first of four free games being offered as part of Epic’s big Mega Sale, which just began.
Borderlands 3 is now available for download and installation on PC via the Epic Games Store. Once you make an account and redeem the game, it’s yours forever, much like previous Epic freebies. This promotion is only valid for the PC version, as is customary.
The chaotic and funny FPS received largely excellent reviews when it was launched in 2019. In our Borderlands 3 review, we gave it an 8/10 for its diverse character builds, a vast range of weapon types and gameplay variation, and a great story that nicely wrapped up the core Borderlands tale.
Don’t wait too long to get Borderlands 3 for free; the offer ends on May 26. Epic will then move on to its next free gift.
Borderlands 3 is a 2019 first-person cooperative shooter. It was recently ranked one of the top Borderlands games of all time by us. While some players didn’t care for the major villains or storyline as much as they did in previous games, the general combat and movement upgrades made looting and shooting for hours on end much more enjoyable. Thanks to next-gen upgrades that increased the shooter’s performance, it also performs brilliantly on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is likely to contain two more Borderlands titles in your library if you’ve been snagging Epic Games Store freebies for a time. In May 2020, the collection was a mystery freebie. Grand Theft Auto V, Civilization VI, and Control are among Epic’s other prominent surprise gifts from recent years.

Borderlands 3 is a cheap hedonistic exercise, much like junk food. It’s not designed to replace a meal, but it still deserves criticism for being what it is and has always been: an addictively playable shooter with some decent ideas and some frustratingly backward attitudes. There’s enough good here to make you want to keep it, but there are also enough negative features to make you want to get rid of it completely. Even yet, if you stumbled across it at a house party, you’d most likely take a mouthful.
Borderlands 3 can be enjoyed by anyone who hasn’t played the previous Borderlands games. It’s a fun loot-based first-person shooter that’s especially good for multiplayer. While Borderlands 3 is frequently on sale, nothing beats getting it for free.
The Epic Games Store Mega Sale, which runs from today until June 16, contains over 1,500 games and a 25% discount coupon (automatically added to your cart upon checkout). Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, the newest Borderlands game, Ghostwire: Tokyo, the excellent XCOM 2, the original Dying Light, and Ubisoft’s open-world shooter Far Cry 6 are among the sale’s highlights.
If you’ve been fortunate enough to receive a Steam Deck, you should absolutely install the Epic Games Launcher. Borderlands 3 and other weekly free games, as well as games purchased during the Mega Sale, will be playable on Steam Deck—as long as the Steam Deck is capable of running them.
