A child’s diagnosis with Cystic Fibrosis meant that doctors predicted that he would not live beyond the age of 7.
On the other side, physicians had projected that Jorge Bacardi would not live past the age of 40 because of his difficult lungs. In the wake of Christopher Mark Gregory’s tragic death from a brain aneurysm at the age of 19, Jorge was given a pair of matching lungs.
On March 27th, in the month of March, Jorge Bacardi completed a seven-hour bilateral lung transplant surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. All of this occurred in 2008. For 64 years, he had toiled with deteriorating lungs. After a successful surgery, Jorge was able to breathe normally for the first time in his life with both of his lungs fully functioning.

Jorge Bacardi, the Cuban-born executive chairman of rum maker Bacardi Ltd., passed away on September 23, 2020, at his home in the Bahamas. He was 76. Christopher was named “guardian angel, Gabriel” by Jorge in the years following Jorge’s surgery and he helped construct the Gabriel House of Care at the Mayo Clinic hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
