Trombone Champ is a Lighthearted Band That Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously, and That’s Great

Holy Wow Studios developed and published Trombone Champ, a 2022 trombone-based rhythm game. Players are tasked with timing their input with music note prompts as they appear on screen, similar to rhythm game titles Guitar Hero and Wii Music, with greater accuracy yielding more points and a higher score. The debut indie title, which went viral on Steam after becoming an Internet meme, will have 25 playable tracks when it is released on September 15, 2022.

Players take control of the titular brass instrument as they attempt to play along to 20 iconic classical music tracks, but the overall experience can be laughably bad due to some purposefully obtuse controls.

Trombone Champ is far from a serious game, but that’s a deliberate design choice, and with some other tongue-in-cheek references thrown in throughout, it’s a breath of fresh air right now.

Now and then, a strange little Indie game will make its way online. This extreme level of publicity can turn a game like Undertale or Stardew Valley into an overnight success, but for games that go viral for the wrong reasons, it can be a death sentence.

Trombone Champ, the internet’s latest craze, falls squarely into the former category, with some of the most absurd, tongue-in-cheek gameplay of any video game this year.

Playing it is surprisingly as entertaining as watching it on video, at least for the first few songs. To toot the trombone, you move the slider with your mouse and click or press a key. The noises you make have only a hazy relationship to music. The graphics Rosamunde is accompanied on-screen by bierkrugs and pretzels leaping and twirling majestically.

Photos of London Bridge and the Union Jack fade reverently in and out of view in the background during a truly appalling rendition of God Save Our King, followed by a massive jpeg of a cooked breakfast.
