After years of criticism, Electronic Arts is officially replacing the Origin app on PC with something new.
A new PC app from Electronic Arts will replace the contentious Origin platform. For more than a decade, Origin has been the preferred platform for EA’s PC games. Even though the platform has made significant progress over time, the name Origin still has a negative connotation for many PC gamers. The decision to offer EA games exclusively on PC through Origin was not well received. However, it appears that EA is now ready to move on.
To begin, Electronic Arts addresses Origin’s legacy.EA immediately states that it has taken user feedback into consideration and acknowledges Origin’s “limitations,”, particularly in light of the PC platform’s development over the past ten years. It clarifies that PC gamers anticipate a faster, more dependable, and simplified gaming platform from the next generation. It makes sense that EA set out to cultivate that level of engagement as a foundation for its own games, services, and content.
That’s what EA has promised for its new app. The new app will simply be referred to as the EA app, and there is no new name for it. With the platform, EA is not attempting to achieve any lofty goals. It explains that the EA app is made to be lightweight, quick, and simple so that PC gamers can easily find and play the games they want.
Automatic game downloads, background updates, and connectivity with other gaming platforms like Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox were all mentioned in the announcement. Players will be able to quickly and easily join in on their friends’ games once they have created their individual EA app ID. To put it another way, it functions as gamers would expect it to.
EA’s desire to have its own PC app is understandable.EA gets 100% of the money when you buy something through a proprietary app, but when you buy something on Steam or other platforms, EA has to share the money. People were compelled to use Origin because it was the exclusive home for many EA games; however, now that many EA games are also coming to Steam, EA will have a harder time convincing people to use the EA app.
Customers shouldn’t care if EA can get PC game players to use its new app, of course. All of this is good news for them. They can use a new EA app, which should perform better than Origin across the board, or they can go to Steam if they prefer. Even though it’s possible that EA is over-promising, it’s still a significant step forward in terms of leaving Origin behind.
