Borderlands is recognized for its ridiculous weapon count, memorable characters, and unique sense of humor, but its numerous Easter eggs have become just another major strength so over years. While seeing Lord of the Rings as well as SpongeBob SquarePants references in Borderlands 3 was fun, it is the series’ nods to certain other online games that provide the best secrets. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ parody of The Witcher, in particular, serves as a model for future entries.
Though the hidden Minecraft cave throughout Borderlands 2’s Caustic Caverns remains iconic, as well as the Captain Scarlett DLC’s parody of BioShock’s Big Daddies was a nice touch, “The Ditcher” took things to the next level by being an entire portion quest. It was on the longer side, like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ best side quests, enabling Gearbox to peek into numerous references toward The White Wolf Geralt of Rivia.
Why “The Ditcher” Was Such a Stellar Quest
Gearbox does not attempt to conceal its pastiche of The Witcher franchise, even as the name of the main NPC is as obvious as the title of the quest. As they progress through “The Ditcher,” players will come into contact with Gerrit of Trivia, a fabled beast hunter with a huge ego who is constantly talking about bedding sorceresses.
As the quest’s name implies, he constantly abandons the Fatemaker to do what he makes a claim are more essential matters, trying to belittle players as they progress through various objectives.
While a fantastic allusion to Yennefer as well as the unicorn scenario from The Witcher 3 makes for noteworthy dialogue, what helps make the quest even more enjoyable is that players complete tasks and rituals to track down and weaken the monster.
Such objectives pick players all over the map, with gamers having to put in work before fighting the creature, just like in The Witcher 3. After defeating the arrogant Ditcher, players face Salissa, one of the game’s better bosses.
Potential Parody Quests in Future Borderlands Games
Given the success of “The Ditcher,” it only helps make sense to create more quests in a similar vein. A possible underwater place in Borderlands 4 would be ideal for parodying BioShock, a sequence that will shortly become much more relevant than before thanks to the release of a new game as well as a Netflix film. Mr. Bubbles would make an excellent boss, and parodying notions such as ADAM or characters such as Andrew Ryan would’ve been simple.
