Recent Controversy About Ada Wong Voiceover in Resident Evil 4, Explained

Although the news that Resident Evil 4 will be remade thrilled fans, some of the alterations have led to some issues.

With numerous installments, spin-offs, and even movies to keep users entertained, the Resident Evil brand is one of the most prominent series in the horror genre. The Resident Evil 4 remake is likely to join the ranks of the remakes that have improved the original games and given the franchise fresh life.

Fans quickly adopted the original Resident Evil 4, which was launched in 2005 and increased the action focus while fully accepting the franchise’s over-the-top, campy characteristics. Gamers aren’t too pleased with several features of the game’s makeover, though.

To ensure they compete with more popular survival horror games, the Resident Evil remakes effectively revised the original structure of each game and included a tonne of contemporary elements. Each remake contains additional features in addition to its enhanced graphics, even though the charm that made the initial games great remains present. Players already saw the Resident Evil 4 remake in action thanks to a recent trailer, but the casting of returning character Ada Wong has generated some debate.

Resident Evil has seen a number of remakes, including that of the upcoming Resident Evil 4, and hardly any of the beloved characters have survived unaltered. The remakes have improved the appearance of the games in addition to giving the characters new hairstyles, more contemporary attire, and overall character redesigns. Players have noticed several alterations since the Resident Evil 4 remake was announced earlier this year, especially with regard to its characters.

The U.S. President’s daughter and kidnap victim Ashley Graham was featured in the most recent Resident Evil 4 story trailer. Players will undoubtedly appreciate Ashley Graham’s apparent improvement over her original portrayal. However, Ada Wong, a series regular and enigmatic antiheroine and spy, has received the greatest attention. Ada is a well-liked character among Resident Evil players, and when it was revealed that Jolene Anderson wouldn’t be returning her role as Ada in the next Resident Evil 4, it seems like fans had a lot to say about it.

The controversy around Ada wrongly interpreted:

Many people found it weird that Jolene Anderson wouldn’t be making a comeback in Resident Evil 4 alongside her character because she gave the voiceover for the English language version of Ada in 2019’s Resident Evil 2.

While Resident Evil 4’s full cast is still unknown, players now understand that Lily Gao will take Anderson’s place as Ada in the forthcoming game. Even while the Chinese-born Canadian actor looks like a good choice for Chinese-American Ada, other people disagreed that race should always be taken into account when casting, especially for voice roles.

The issue of portrayal in video games still exists, and it is crucial to accurately reflect characters’ racial and ethnic backgrounds in order to promote variety as well as visibility. The fact that Lily Gao played Ada in the critically panned live-action movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a further grievance for some fans.

Many gamers felt that there shouldn’t be any relationship between both the games and the unpopular movie, while some thought Anderson was excellent as Ada. Fans will not only have to adjust to this adjustment in Resident Evil 4, but it has certainly generated a lot of discussions.

Resident Evil 4 arrives for PC, PS4, and Xbox on March 24, 2023.
