Early Life

William Lancelot Bowles Jr. was born on 4 August in the year 1867 in London, England. Both his parents were from different countries as his father was from Ireland and was a reputated dentist at that time and his mother belong to English.

Education

After the birth of William Lancelot Bowles Jr., the family moved to Boston when he was just 2 years old and later education and childhood life were done in Boston, Massachusetts.

He also did dentistry as his father had done and continued the legacy. He attended Tufts College for his dentistry course after his primary study was completed.

He graduated in 1890 and began working in his father’s dental practice.

Bowles married Margaret McCarthy in 1895 and they had three children together. In 1898, he opened his dental practice which he ran until his retirement in 1933.

Career Life

During his career, Bowles became well-known for his work in developing new techniques for dental surgery and prosthetics. He also wrote several books on dentistry which were widely used as textbooks by students of the profession.

Higher Education And Career

After retiring from dentistry, Bowles moved to Florida where he died on February 28th, 1940 at the age of 72. His father worked as a dentist and his mother was a housewife.

The family resided in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Bowles Jr. attended public schools in Brooklyn and graduated from Boys High School in 1967. He then went on to attend Howard University in Washington D.C., where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1971.

After graduation, he returned to New York City and attended Columbia University’s School of Dentistry, graduating with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1975. After completing his dental training, Bowles Jr. began working as an associate dentist at his father’s dental practice in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He practiced dentistry for over 40 years before retiring in 2019.

During his career, Bowles Jr. served as a mentor to many young dentists and was active in several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association and the National Dental Association. Bowles Jr.’s work as a dentist has been recognized. He graduated from Meharry in 1897 and began his career as a dentist.

In 1898, Dr. Bowles enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Upon his return to the United States, he set up a dental practice in Washington D.C., which he ran for over 50 years. He also served as president of both the Howard University Alumni Association and the Meharry Medical College Alumni Association.

A lifelong learner, Dr. Bowles continued to take courses and attend seminars throughout his career. He was also a prolific writer, authoring numerous articles on dentistry and oral health care. Dr. Bowles passed away on February 17, 1966, at the age of 91.
