His Early Life

By the time he was six years old, Andrea Bocelli had developed a fascination with music because it was one of the few things that made him happy. Bocelli began learning the piano at a young age and later picked up the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. Although he developed skills on a variety of instruments, his voice turned out to be the most rewarding musical outlet. Bocelli grew up listening to well-known opera singers and envisioned himself as a tenor in the future.

Before the age of 12, Bocelli could still see to some extent, but an accident during a soccer game caused him to go entirely blind before he turned ten. He was acting as the goalkeeper when the ball hit him in the eye, causing a bleed. Bocelli had a greater-than-usual obsession with singing.

Career

In 1992, when he worked on the song “Misere” alongside renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti and rock star Zucchero, Andrea Bocelli first gained international recognition. Bocelli was initially simply scheduled to contribute vocals to the demo tape, which was subsequently forwarded to Pavarotti for review. But after hearing Bocelli perform, Pavarotti insisted that this new tenor upstart take the lead.

Ultimately, it was agreed that Pavarotti and Bocelli would perform together. “Misere” was shot to fame as soon as it was made available.

After that, Bocelli went on tour with Zucchero, singing solo and in duets for various songs. He was then almost certainly signed by a major label. Bocelli competed in several music and song competitions across Italy in 1993 and 1994, taking first place in a number of them. Within weeks in 1994, his debut album became platinum. He performed on tour once more that year and made his operatic debut in Verdi’s production of the well-known Scottish play. His role was “Macduff.”

Bocelli worked with numerous other singers between 1994 and 1997, releasing more albums. Particularly “Time to Say Goodbye,” which achieved six times platinum status, many of these songs performed incredibly well across the board. When PBS broadcast one of his concerts in Germany, he also made his debut in front of American audiences that year.
