Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman is popularly known for his role in Harry Potter. He is an actor as well as a director.
In a 2005 interview with Empire magazine, Rickman said that he “wasn’t happy” with the direction his character was going in the fifth film, Order of the Phoenix. However, he decided to stay with the franchise because he felt Snape’s redemption arc was a “cliff edge to hang on to.”
Rickman passed away on January 14, 2016, at the age of 69. In one of his books, he reveals and mentioned many things and also said that in mid-2000 he decided to quit the franchise but later offered the role of Snape in 2001.
Rickman was an accomplished stage actor before he was cast as Snape in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He brought a wealth of experience and gravitas to the role, which helped make the character one of the most beloved (and despised) in the entire series.
However, by the time 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire rolled around, Rickman was growing tired of the role. In his diary, he writes that he was “frustrated” with how Snape was being used in the films, feeling that the character wasn’t getting enough screen time or development.
He also worried that fans would never see beyond Snape’s cold exterior to appreciate the nuances of his performance. Fortunately, Rickman stuck with it, and Snape went on to have a rich and complex arc throughout all eight films.
His decision to stay ultimately paid off, both creatively and financially – though we’re sure he would have been just as successful had he chosen to leave.
Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was an English actor and director. He was born on 21 February 1946 and died on 14 January 2016. He is best known for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.
Extracts from Rickman’s diary, which were published posthumously, reveal that the actor wanted to quit the Harry Potter franchise in the mid-2000s. However, he decided to stay because he was invested in Snape’s redemption arc.
Rickman was a hugely talented and respected actor, and his portrayals of Snape are some of the most memorable aspects of the Harry Potter films. It is clear that even though he may have wanted to walk away from the franchise at one point, he ultimately decided to stick it out for the sake of the character and the fans.
