Ariana Grande Cancelled Controversy: Did She Get Cancelled for Asian Fishing?

Ariana Grande Cancelled for Asian Fishing? People usually try to dress up in stereotypical Asian girl attire, such as anime girl costumes and Asian schoolgirl uniforms. Asian fishing is regarded as obnoxious and questionable.

On December 5th, Ariana Grande’s photos caused a stir on social media. In those photos, she was seen posing for the camera while wearing an oversized jacket.

What Is Asian Fishing?

When a non-Asian imitates or dresses up to look like an Asian, this is known as Asian fishing. It’s similar to black fishing. This is the act of applying makeup to achieve East-Asian features or resemble East-Asian features through Photoshop. This is frequently perceived as fetishizing, demeaning, and sexualizing Asian culture.

Why Is Ariana Accused of Asian Fishing?

So far, 2021 has been an interesting and exciting year for Singer and songwriter Ariana Grande, who married this year and joined the mentoring panel of the 21st season of the American singing reality competition- The Voice.

Ariana Grande Cancelled for Asian Fishing

Regrettably, on December 5th, she sparked controversy by uploading photos on social media platforms such as Instagram, which irritated netizens who accused her of Asian fishing.

After that, the whole Twitter saga began. While some of her followers praised her, others took the opportunity to criticize her makeup and appearance.

Ariana first shared the photos on December 1st. However, she was forced to delete a few posts after netizens began to mock her photos.

Challenging the Grammys

In February 2019, there were reports that Ariana Grande had canceled her planned performance at the 61st annual Grammy Awards due to disagreements with the production team. Ken Ehrlich, the producer, later claimed to the Associated Press that Grande had felt it was too late to put together a performance.

In response, Grande took to Twitter to express her side of the story, stating, “Mhmmm here it is! I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me. I can pull together a performance overnight, and you know that, Ken. It was when my creativity and self-expression were stifled by you that I decided not to attend. I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.”

Grande’s frustration stemmed from being told she could only perform “7 Rings” as part of a medley. She indicated in her tweets that she had offered alternative song suggestions and emphasized the importance of collaboration, support, art, and honesty in music, rather than political maneuvers and games. Despite the controversy, Grande returned to the Grammy stage in January 2020 to perform, and she had received Grammy nominations and won awards that year.

How Are Netizens Reacting?

One Reddit user commented on her looks after her photos went viral on various social media platforms, “…The way she tаkes pictures from certаin аngles (low) or weаrs mаkeup to conceаl her eyelids, creаting а monolid look, mаkes her eyes аppeаr less round аnd nаrrower.”

Her petite stature, which is а stereotype of Eastern Asian women, and her cutesy submissive yet innocent personа, which is yet another fetishizаtion of Eastern Asian women.”

Ariana’s Twitter Drama Behind Asian Fishing

The user, known as teddyccino, went on to recall the 2019 events in which Grande was also accused of black fishing, adding, “It’s also worth noting that Ari was accused of blackfishing a few years ago due to her use of certain words, accent, use of rap and hip hop in her music, and, of course, her overzealous tanning (which her stans claimed was just down to her Italian background lol). She is now quite pale, which is once again a beauty standard in East Asia.”

Grande has not yet responded to the allegations.

Fans Support Ariana

While many joined the cancel culture by talking about Ariana and Asian fishing, others came forward to defend the singer.

“This generation is beyond obsessed with cancel culture, and people actively LOOK for something to offend,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another person defended the 7 Rings singer, saying: “I’m beginning to believe that people on this app have no idea what Asian or black people look like. For example, if you see Ariana Grande and think she’s anything other than white, you have a major problem.
