Everything you need to know about Destiny 2’s plot before The Witch Queen arrives.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is almost here, and it promises to be one of the game’s largest expansions ever. But, unlike Destiny’s earlier additions, The Witch Queen’s plot is a significant lure. Not only has Bungie been trying to develop the Destiny universe in recent years, but this is also a sequel to The Taken King, a 2015 addition to the original Destiny that people still laud for its plot.

Understanding the history of Savathun, The Witch Queen’s titular ruler will be critical to the expansion. Let’s start with what the original Destiny’s Books of Sorrow covered.

Long before the Traveler (a mystery sphere driven by Light, which we’ll get to later) arrived on Earth, it sat above Fundament, an oceanic gas giant planet. On Fundament, many factions of the Proto-Hive, including Savathun’s family, resided. Her father was the Osmium King, and he had three daughters, Aurash, Sathona, and Xi Ro (at the time).

After diving into Fundament on a special ship, the daughters encountered the Worm Gods, who had been crying out through the Osmium King’s familiar. The daughters struck a deal with the worms, absorbing the creature’s children and the remainder of the Proto-Hive on Fundament. These worms granted their hosts eternal life and incredible power. The worms would consume the daughters or their offspring if they ever ceased murdering.

The worms evolved the Proto-Hive into the Hive, the Guardians’ current adversary. Aurash was renamed Auryx, and then Oryx became the new king (changing his sex to male). Sathona was renamed Savathun, which means “Mother.” And Xi Ro became a Knight, Xivu Arath. The three Fundament escaped with the Worm Gods and a swarm of Hive. The siblings blame the Traveler for the God Wave and have been trying to consume its Light ever since.

THE TRAVELLER, THE GHOSTS, AND THE GUARDIANS

Humans ultimately discovered the Traveler lurking in the Sol system years later. It bestowed a golden age to humanity, enhancing their technological prowess. However, the Darkness tracked out the Traveler and attacked him ages later. Before the Traveler could depart, Rasputin, a human-made AI, supposedly shot it down, stranding it on Earth.

The Traveler, damaged and in need of defenders for its new home during this new time of Darkness (known as the Collapse), issued Ghosts: little, drone-like beings that carry part of the Traveler’s Light. Ghosts explore the system for the ideal Guardian to couple with: a dead human, an Awoken (mutated space humans), or an Exo (a robot with a human mind). The Ghosts use the Light to forge a link with a dead corpse they deem worthy (their Guardian), bringing it back to life and bestowing it with abilities.

THE THRONE WORLDS AND THE ORIGINAL DESTINY

The original Destiny recounts a rather disjointed tale about an extraterrestrial culture known as the Vex (time-traveling robots) and an intriguing locale known as the Black Garden. That’s unlikely to be significant to the plot of The Witch Queen, so we’ll skip over it.

What you need to know from Destiny is that in The Dark Below expansion, Guardians murdered a Hive God named Crota, who happened to be Oryx’s son. Oryx comes to seek vengeance in The Taken King. He “killed” Queen Mara Sov of the Reef in the first fight and sent her brother, Uldren Sov, falling into a neighboring planet.

The Guardians invaded and murdered Oryx’s Dreadnaught ship. Oryx, instead of dying, went to his Throne World.

PRE-WITCH QUEEN EXPANSIONS IN DESTINY 2

During the Red War campaign in Destiny 2, a war-focused species known as the Cabal attacked Earth and sealed off the Traveler’s Light, leading Guardians to temporarily lose their abilities. The Guardian Vanguard (the Last City’s leadership) defeated the Cabal armies and recaptured the Light. During the Leviathan raid, players demonstrated their worth to the Cabal’s opulent ex-emperor, Calus, who is enamored with the Darkness.

Uldren Sov reappeared in the Forsaken expansion, killing the famed Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 and his Ghost. The Guardians sought vengeance for Cayde and pursued Uldren to the gates of the Dreaming City, the Awoken homeworld of the Dreaming City. It was then revealed that Uldren, who had spent the whole time hunting for his sister, was nothing more than a puppet of Riven (who in turn was a pawn of Savathun). Riven was defeated in the raid The Last Wish.

Guardians returned to Earth’s moon in the Shadowkeep expansion and discovered a Pyramid Ship (the Traveler’s counterpart, but for the Darkness). An armada of these Pyramid Ships appeared in the Sol system a year later and consumed whole in-game locales, including Mars.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DURING THE WITCH QUEEN

You’ve now completed the shortened Destiny narrative. However, when you embark on The Witch Queen’s campaign, keep the following thoughts and questions in mind:

  • The new expansion’s plot revolves around Savathun stealing the Light and becoming a Hive Guardian. How did she achieve this if the Traveler is the one who produces Ghosts and Ghosts select who is “worthy” to become a Guardian?
  • In Season of the Chosen during the Red War campaign, the Cabal demonstrated light-suppressing technologies. Is that how we’re going to defeat Savathun?

  • What is the origin of the Traveler and the Darkness?
