Chef Peter Prime of Cane and others removed from The JBF Award 2022’s nominations.

When it comes to the culinary world, The James Beard Foundation award is the most coveted and prestigious honor a restaurant or a chef can receive in the United States of America. It celebrates fine cuisine and recognizes exceptionally talented culinary professionals around Beard’s birthday annually. The awards cover 20 categories and are voted on by more than 600 culinary professionals, including previous award winners. Previous winners include Zahav in Philadelphia and Topolobampo in Chicago. Other awards include; Best New Restaurant, Outstanding Chef Award, Rising Star, Chef of the Year, Outstanding Restaurant, and Outstanding Pastry Chef. Patrick O’Connell, the chef/owner behind three Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington is one of the most regular winners having been awarded a James Beard medal five times and has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his four decades of work at the Inn. All recipients receive a medallion etched with the image of James Beard and a certificate from the Foundation.

The eligibility rules for the most anticipated awards of The James Beard Foundation states that “only candidates who are active and whose businesses are open will be considered”. On basis of this, Chef Peter prime of cane and others were later removed from the nomination of best chef Mid Atlantic. Luis Young of Penrose Room in Colorado Springs and Ben Welch of Botanica in Wildwood, Missouri are others that were also removed for similar reasons. Welch left Botanica in January 2022 to work on a cookbook and find a home for a new restaurant he’s working on. Meanwhile, the Penrose Room is listed as “temporarily closed.” Whereas, Prime is currently working on a workbook that draws attention to the roots of Caribbean cuisine. And has also recently collaborated with chef Erik Bruner-Yang. Prime, in February, has parted ways with Cane, the much-loved Trinidadian restaurant on H Street, Northeast in which he was a partner. He is also the recipient of The chef of the year at Eater DC for 2019, running both restaurants (Cane and Spark) with his sister and former business partner Janine Prime. They cite a “private family issue” as the reason for leaving, also according to the Washingtonian.

Later, Chicago chef Jason Vincent was added to the list of nominees. Check out the list of all semifinalists in all categories.

The Official credit card and banking partner of the James Beard Foundation, Capital One will be presenting this year much-awaited award.

The James Beard Foundation Awards consist of five separate recognition programs and two special achievement awards: Media Awards, which include: Book, Broadcast Media, Journalism; Restaurant and Chef Awards, Leadership Awards, Lifetime Achievement, and Humanitarian of the Year Awards. After two strained years, the date of the award ceremony is scheduled to take place as it had in pre-pandemic times, i.e. the winners will be crowned in Chicago on Monday, June 13, 2022.
