Thanks in large part to the season 3 post-credits scene, the most recent set of episodes left us with a lot of unanswered questions. We’ve put together a guide on what we believe will be in store for the superpowered siblings while we wait for Netflix to formally confirm the show’s renewal.
The Umbrella Academy, a satirical superhero series on Netflix, has returned after a two-year hiatus with a new apocalypse and twice as many heroes. The siblings’ return to 2019 in Season 3 finds Reginald Hargreeves creating the Sparrow Academy, a new family that is extremely antagonistic to the Umbrellas. As our initial heroes seek refuge in the enigmatic Hotel Oblivion, they learn that their time-traveling has triggered a paradoxical black hole that is engulfing the entire cosmos.
While an apocalypse is normal fare for The Umbrella Academy, there are plenty of other loose ends that need to be tied, too. Below, we’ve forecasted when the release date would be as well as the story points that we think will be covered by a fourth season. Continue reading to learn everything we currently know about The Umbrella Academy season 4; but, if you haven’t seen the most recent episodes, proceed with caution since there are huge The Umbrella Academy season 3 spoilers ahead.
The fourth and final season of the tale would want to conclude, according to series creator Steve Blackman. Blackman told TheWrap, “I think obviously if we got a season 4, it’s moving towards an endgame.” “After Season 4, I’m not sure where we’d go, I guess, at some point. We must exercise caution.”
How will Season 4 play out?
The brothers visit a new universe in the cliffhanger that may have changed the course of the third season. In order to press the reset button, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) killed Reginald (Colm Feore). She is now reunited with her husband and daughter. While the Hotel Oblivion no longer exists, Viktor (Elliot Page), Diego (David Castaeda), Lila (Ritu Arya), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min), and Klaus (Robert Sheehan) are all still alive. Additionally, their abilities—including Five’s capacity to travel through time and space—have been taken away.
Since The Umbrella Academy season 4 hasn’t yet been ordered, a release date for it on Netflix is unknown. We can, however, estimate that there will be a break of roughly one and a half years between seasons 1 and 2, and slightly under two years between seasons 2 and 3. We may anticipate additional episodes to air between December 2023 and June 2024 since Season 3 was launched in June 2022.
Season three featured the Umbrella Academy as they traveled back in time to 1963 and encountered the Sparrow Academy and an unknown destructive force causing devastation throughout the cosmos. Without a trailer or synopsis, it’s difficult to predict what The Umbrella Academy season 4 will bring, but the way season 3 ended offers us a solid sense of probable narrative points.
For starters, the season 3 finale will show the effects of the Hargreeves’ universe-resetting. Additionally, the mid-credits scene gives the impression that Umbrella Ben is back, yet Sparrow Ben is still visible, which further complicates things. We might even learn more about Umbrella Ben’s death. Luther is searching for Sloane, who vanished at the end of season three, while Reginald’s deceased wife Abigail appears to have risen from the grave as well.
As Ray, the guy she was married to in 1963, comes in the present day at the conclusion of season 3, we might infer this has something to do with it. We may also learn the details of the agreement Reginald made with Alison, as well as how he was able to make this happen. What actors will be in season four?
By the conclusion of season three, it seems expected that Elliot Page and Tom Hopper will both reprise their roles as Viktor and Luther, respectively. David Castaeda will portray Diego, Aidan Gallagher will play Five, and Robert Sheehan will play Klaus. Ben will be played by Justin H. Min, and Ritu Arya will return as Lila.

While the season 3 ending gave the impression that Reginald’s deceased wife Abigail, who was portrayed by Liisa Repo-Martell in her brief season 1 cameo, was alive and well, it appears that Colm Feore will reprise his role as Reginald Hargreeves.
Ritu Arya, Diego’s love interest and the Handlers’ adopted daughter is most likely to return, and it appears that Yusuf Gatewood will play Ray, Alison’s husband from 1963. Then there is Genesis Rodriguez, who plays Sloane, one of the two remaining Sparrows alongside Ben. She vanished at the conclusion of season 3, thus it is unknown if she is still alive and if she would return for a hypothetical season 4.
What would be the topic of Season 4?
There are many possible directions for The Umbrella Academy’s upcoming season because of its reputation for cliffhanger season finales. A confrontation between the Umbrellas and Hargreeves, who now appear to own every skyscraper in New York and likely possess the political clout to match, is the main plot point of the season 3 finale. It would be quite intriguing to watch what would happen if the group went up against their father directly now that he is at his strongest and has his living dead love by his side. (Plus, let’s hope Luther informs the others that the guy is an alien.)
There are other minor features that can be used to support further theories. The only people that worked on the machine were Allison and Hargreeves, and it appears that both of them are happy in this new realm. Allison still has the bloodied wrap around her arm, suggesting that she might still have her powers, in contrast to the other Umbrellas who are unharmed but have lost their abilities. It’s also unclear which side she will support in the Umbrellas v. Hargreeves case; if defeating their father means losing Ray and Claire once more, she might continue to support the opposition.
Another significant issue is how Post-Credits Ben fits in. This is Sparrow Ben, according to showrunner Steve Blackman, who also told Men’s Health that season 4 will explain “why he’s there or what the spectacles are all about.” Sloane, who assisted in running the machine but did not emerge with the rest of the group, is likewise a mystery. Other unresolved issues are Diego and Lila’s unborn child, the possibility that Five founded the Commission at some point in his life, and whether ousting Hargreeves entails simply beating him or altering the past/creating a new one. (Or simply this one’s annihilation. What would the series be without an impending apocalypse, after all?
