Dev Teases Plans for Future Customization in Sea of Thieves, Should Sea of Tease Be Taken Down?

In Sea of Thieves, Rare has always embraced the notion of “tools, not rules,” allowing players to forge their own distinctive identities. Without having to be taught that one way is the only way to play the game, players are free to roleplay as they see fit, partake in activities they enjoy, and generally define their own pirate experiences. As a result, playing Sea of Thieves has always been a very intimate experience for players.

With the introduction of captaincy, a chance to name your ship, and a way to customize your captain’s cabin based on how you choose to play, Sea of Thieves season 7 has now sought to reward players for how they play.

Mike Chapman, the creative director, and Shelley Preston, the lead designer, recently spoke with Game Rant about these new features and plans for features like captaincy. With this update, players will be able to identify their ships as homes on the Sea of Thieves, acting as Black Pearls for Jack Sparrow and Queen Anne’s Revenge for Blackbeard, respectively.

Many could consider it to be Sea of Thieves ultimate objective because it is so in-depth.

Preston explained that leadership rewards personal roleplay and promotes that element with a set of personal awards, so Game Rant questioned whether there were any plans to enable more personalization. “Definitely, yes. why not “was Chapman’s instantaneous reply.

Although it’s difficult to envision exactly what this could be, Rarely does have plans to give players even more control over this experience. The thought that captaincy in Sea of Thieves is just the beginning is intriguing.

Captaincy discusses Rare’s goals for Sea of Thieves, and Preston adds that while Rare doesn’t want to scale back its goals, doing so while maintaining a balance with the game’s content can be challenging.

However, they intend to never give up on that dream, leaving a wide range of customizable options for Sea of Thieves. Chapman has stated that season 8 would be equally ambitious in a similar manner. Season 8 of Sea of Thieves hasn’t even begun yet, so it’s premature to focus on it, but it’s encouraging to know that it will be just as ambitious as season 7.
