The Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress is the biggest and most important political event in China. It is held every five years, and the 19th CPC National Congress was held in Beijing from October 18 to 24, 2017.
The National Congress is a major event for reviewing the work of the CPC Central Committee and electing the new central leadership. It is also an important occasion for the CPC to unite and mobilize the whole Party and people of all ethnic groups across the country to focus on building socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era.
This year’s National Congress was of great significance as it was held at a critical juncture when China is accelerating its transformation from a big country to a strong one. The Congress put forward a series of major initiatives to move China forward on its path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
These initiatives include: deepening reform and opening up, advancing economic, political, cultural, social, and ecological civilization, promoting the rule of law, and building a community with a shared future for humanity. Congress also elected the new CPC Central Committee, which is composed of 205 full members and 169 alternate members.
The new Central Committee will lead the CPC and the Chinese people in pushing forward China’s modernization drive in the new era.
It convenes once every five years to elect the Central Committee, review and approve major party and state policies, and elect the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
The congress also adopted a report by Xi Jinping on the work of the CPC Central Committee over the last five years and set the agenda for China’s development in the next five years. Now this year, China’s people will witness the 20th CPC national congress.
The CPC national congress makes almost all important decisions of the CPC. It is convened at least once every five years, and its main functions are to hear and review reports on the work of the CPC Central Committee, elected members and alternates to the CPC Central Committee, and elect the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee.
The congress was widely seen as an important event not only for China but also for the world at large. This was because it was held at a time when globalization was under attack and when the world economy was facing various challenges.
