Find Out If George Maharis Is Gay Or Not! All The Known Details Are Here About His Sexual Orientation

September 1, 2022, was the 94th birthday of George Maharis.

Hollywood actor George Maharis (born 1928) was detained on November 21, 1974, and accused of engaging in sex acts in a Los Angeles gas station’s men’s room with a male hairstylist.

Maharis, who was 46 at the time, was arrested on suspicion of sex perversion and freed after posting a $500 bond. Maharis was detained by a vice squad officer for indecent behavior in a Hollywood restaurant toilet six years prior; the officer said Maharis made a pass at him.

His Past And Sexual Orientation

Ah, well, at least we got that out of the way… Maharis, who is best known for playing Buz Murdock on the popular CBS television series Route 66 in the 1960s, had recently done a nude photo shoot for Playgirl the year before his 1974 arrest.

The 1960–1964 television series Route 66 followed two men and a Corvette as they traveled the nation together, sometimes dressed in jackets and ties for no apparent reason. That’s not a joke. For this part in 1962, Maharis was nominated for an Emmy. The reason behind Maharis’ abrupt departure from the hugely popular show has been heavily rumored.

Because the shootings were so taxing, Maharis claimed that he had developed infectious hepatitis in 1962 and that continuing to work would be dangerous to his health. To be replaced in the role of Lincoln Case by Glenn Corbett, he quit the program after asking the producers for a less demanding schedule.

Others, though, describe a distinct scenario. When Herbert B. Leonard, the producer of Route 66, learned that Maharis was gay, he struggled to keep the public informed about his star’s extramarital affairs. Leonard said that Maharis also made advantage of his sickness as a justification for breaking his contract in order to pursue a career in acting. The writer-producer of Route 66 and co-star Martin Milner (playing Tod) attest to it.

Maharis did finally get into the movie industry, but all of his pictures were forgettable B-grade productions. Maharis also played roles on the stage, but nothing ever achieved the same level of success as his role as Buz on Route 66, and the TV program never really recovered when Maharis left.

His Reason For Leaving Route 66

The truth of why Maharis abandoned Route 66, according to Karen Blocher, who is writing a book about him and spoke with him for the project, is a combination of the two. When the producers found out about Maharis’s sexual orientation, they felt deceived and tricked and never trusted him again.

Maharis began to sense that he was running the show and going unnoticed. The producers thus concluded that when he became ill, recovered, and then began complaining about the working environment, it was all a ruse to either earn more money or to break free from his contract and start making movies. They may have communicated more effectively and found a solution to their problems in a time when homophobia was less prevalent.

In addition to his acting career, Maharis had a singing career as well. He released seven albums between the years 1962 and 1966, which coincided with his debut on Route 66. Throughout the 1980s, Maharis made frequent appearances at Las Vegas nightclubs.
