Time is critical to understand because different things happen at other times of the day. A good example is when you barely make it out of a crypt alive, only to discover that there is a hundred undead surrounding you because it is late at night. It also aids in the completion of quests on time.
Many intricately designed RPG systems in Stoneshard work together to create an immersive, realistic game world. Hunger, thirst, and rest are basic survival requirements, but there are also dynamic quests, timed events, and NPC routines. The underlying system that drives all of these other systems is time, and the time progression of Stoneshard is meticulously calibrated. Stoneshard may have one of the best day/night cycles in gaming when it finally leaves Early Access.
In games, day/night cycles have a history of being over- or underutilized; at times, they can be overly complex or opaque. While Stoneshard’s time system is imperfect, it keeps a steady heartbeat that thumps with just the right amount of force.
How the time system works in Stoneshard
Stoneshard uses precise figures to track the passage of time. Every time the character takes action, time advances by one turn (moves, attacks, eats, rests, etc.). This contrasts Minecraft’s handling of time, which offers time in real-world minutes. In Stoneshard, each day lasts 24 hours (2,880 turns) and is divided into four phases: dawn, day, dusk, and night. Each step is six hours long. Every hour, 120 turns are required. Each turn thus represents 30 seconds of gameplay time.

The color of the outdoor light indicates the time to players. They will need to rest for an hour to move the slider to the correct time.
Many players have complained that there is no easy way to determine the exact time of a move in the game. Some argue that the mystery adds to the immersion, while others say that the character can see where the sun is in the sky and that the UI should include some indicator. Ink Stains Games could improve this area as it exits Early Access. If not, the moderators will most likely intervene once more.
Everything in Stoneshard happens on a specific timetable. Quests have completion dates, NPCs have schedules, hunger and thirst accumulate over time, and so on. The following events occur during each of the four phases of the day:
- At dawn, NPCs awaken and begin their daily lives. All stores are open by late morning.
- At day: Shopkeepers go about their business, while NPCs do theirs.
- At twilight: Shopkeepers close their doors and go home at the end of the day.
- At Night: Undead creatures play in graveyards and other places where the dead are typically found.
