What is an F3 Challenge?

The F3 Challenge is the primary competition held by the global seafood industry to encourage innovation in the development and commercialization of fishmeal and fish oil-free aquaculture feeds, which will eliminate the use of wild-caught fish in these feeds.

To eliminate wild-caught fish in aquaculture feeds, the F3 Challenge is the world’s top competition for the seafood industry. It aims to inspire innovation in the creation and commercialization of fishmeal-and oil-free aquaculture feeds.

The non-GMO plant-based feed for rainbow trout from the United States’ Star Milling Co. was recognized for its inclusion of heart-healthy flax oil and omega-3 DHA-rich algae. Jiangsu Fuhai Biotech, based in China, employs its special Fatide® product for its largemouth bass feed, which is made of dehulled, full-fat soybeans that have undergone microbial and enzyme fermentation.

For its vegetarian recipe utilizing Veramaris’ algal oil high in EPA and DHA omegas for Pacific white shrimp, the Ecuadorian business Empagran won.

Kevin Fitzsimmons, professor at the University of Arizona and chairman of the F3 Challenge, made the following remarks during a special ceremony at the Global Seafood Alliance’s GOAL convention:

“We congratulate all the contestants who rose to the challenge despite all the recent adversity and supply chain disruptions,”. “Their hard work and flexibility paid off.”

The contenders who created and sold the most “fish-free” feed—feed made without using wild-caught fish or any other marine animal—in each of the three categories—salmon, shrimp, and other carnivorous species—were given the awards.

Regarding those who won prizes:

•For its non-GMO plant-based feed for rainbow trout that contains omega-3 DHA-rich algae and heart-healthy flax oil, American company Star Milling Co. received recognition.

•For its vegetarian recipe using Veramaris’ algal oil, which is rich in EPA and DHA omegas, for Pacific white shrimp, the Ecuadorian company Empagran won.

•Jiangsu Fuhai Biotech, founded in China, uses its recognizable Fatide® product, which is made of dehulled, full-fat soybeans fermented by bacteria and enzymes, as the main ingredient in its largemouth bass feed.

•For its ground-breaking red sea bream meal, the Japanese company Dainichi Corporation got an Honorable Mention Award and a US$25,000 reward.

•By lowering the aquaculture industry’s dependency on fishmeal and fish oil to future-proof the supply chain, The F3-Future of Fish Feed ensures improved global food security.
