After spending Christmas at Sandringham with his royal family, Prince William was headed to Scotland to spend the New Year with his girlfriend and her family. So, the Middletons had worked hard to welcome the prince, but William didn’t just show up.
According to royal writer Katie Nicholl, the prince reportedly informed Kate that the plans had changed a few days after her father and grandmother advised them not to rush into their relationship. In addition, he confirmed the couple’s breakup shortly after the royal family’s New Year’s Eve celebration.

Katie Nicholl, a royal author, claimed in her 2011 book The Making of a Royal Romance that prince William decided not to attend Middleton’s party after having an upsetting conversation with his father and grandmother.
If the prince was not ready to marry, his father told him to leave Middleton. Prince William was greatly influenced by the words of his family, so rather than finally proposing to Kate Middleton, he chose to hurt her and make her family look bad. After all, how else could he have missed the family celebration when everyone knew about it?
Kinsey Schofield, a royal commentator, says that Middleton’s behavior after the breakup earned the late Queen’s respect because she didn’t talk about her relationship with Prince William. “The Royal Family knew she was a good girl, they knew she wasn’t talking to the media because in between those breakups, she was so stoic and kept her mouth shut and in all of the photographs of her during the breakup, she’s looking forward,” Schofield told Express UK.
“She just handled herself so well throughout the rollercoaster that was her and Prince William’s dating history leading up to their inevitable marriage,” she continued. It was a foregone conclusion that Kate would be the next Queen.
