Apple is set to launch its flagship of the year a few months later and debate is still in heat for what the Cupertino giant might have in store for us. The iPhone 8 has been a subject to ample leaks and rumors lately and by the passage of time, we’re getting mixed reports about the Touch ID implementation. While earlier the iPhone was rumored to feature Touch ID at the back of the device. Later, the move turned into a fingerprint reader embedded beneath the display. Nonetheless, if a new report from Bloomberg is anything to be considered, the iPhone 8 will not feature the Touch ID option at all, instead Apple will opt for 3D sensing and facial recognition technology.
Apple To Ditch Touch ID For 3D Sensing Facial Recognition System?
Up until now, we were expecting the device to feature the Touch ID sensor under the display and it really excited us. Touch ID located beneath the display would give more screen real estate to the device and the fact that it would not be located at the back side of the device would not interfere with the looks of the upcoming iPhone 8. Apple is now considering to drop the Touch ID option from the iPhone 8 altogether and in its place, the company is planning to implement 3D sensing and facial recognition. The later would not only be used for unlocking the device but to authenticate payments as well.
“For its redesigned iPhone, set to go on sale later this year, Apple is testing an improved security system that allows users to log in, authenticate payments, and launch secure apps by scanning their face, according to people familiar with the product. This is powered by a new 3-D sensor, added the people, who asked not to be identified discussing technology that’s still in development. The company is also testing eye scanning to augment the system, one of the people said.”
However, this is not the first time that we’re hearing about the addition of a facial recognition security system as Apple is possibly working to add a gigantic improvement in the front facing camera. In addition to this, a new report from the popular analyst, Ming Chi Kuo also states that the iPhone 8 will ditch the Touch ID option.
The device is said to feature a lot of other major additions as well. The company’s move into the augmented reality side of things is really showing up as well as developers have been working to make use of the company’s ARKit recently. However, it depends on time whether the company sees fit to replace the Touch ID sensor with a 3D sensing facial recognition security system.
