Stranger Things Season 5 Confirmed Coming by the Duffer Brothers, Release Date, Spoilers, Cast, News

When does Stranger Things 5 come out? Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have now confirmed that season 5 will be the end of the Netflix series.

Stranger Things season 4 is in full swing now, and ahead of the release of season 4 volume 2, many are wondering what’s next for the Netflix Original. Are these upcoming two episodes it, or will there be more seasons to come? We don’t blame you for wanting to know.

Stranger Things fans, it’s official – Stranger Things 5 has finally been confirmed as the final season of the Netflix series.

The Netflix powerhouse created by the Duffer Brothers is arguably the most popular show the streaming service has to offer. The nostalgia hits, intriguing storylines, and magnificent characters make the Certified Fresh series a worthwhile endeavor from start to finish.

The extended waiting period between seasons 3 and 4 had fans hungrier than ever for more episodes, and it’s no secret many people would love to see the show never end. However, while it’s disappointing, it will come to a conclusion sooner or later.

In a statement alongside the release date for Stranger Things 4, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, said: “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.”

Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 debuted on May 27 and fans absolutely loved the seven episodes. They are scary, heartwarming, hilarious, and everything you want out of this show! Volume 2 is now on the horizon, coming to Netflix this Friday, July 1.

While we wait, there is no need to travel into the far reaches of the Upside Down for information about a potential Stranger Things season 5, because we have everything you need to know below!

So, Stranger Things 5 has now been confirmed at Netflix – and the latest rumours also suggest that preparation has already begun on season 5.

But when will it be released? What will happen after the ending of Stranger Things 4? And who will be returning to the cast? Look, we know it’s a loooong way off but, here’s everything we know about Stranger Things season 5 so far…

Will there be a Stranger Things 5?

Yes, Stranger Things 5 is happening – and it will be the final season.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer previously said: “Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.”

It sounds like the Duffer brothers are confident that they can deliver another iconic season of the show, which is a really great sign considering how incredible season 4 has been so far. (There’s still another two episodes to come in Volume 2 as well.)

Is Stranger Things season 4 the last season?

Good news, fans! Stranger Things season 4 is not the last season. Netflix and the Duffers announced in Feb. 2022 that Stranger Things season 5 is in the works. And more recently, the show’s creators have even teased what to expect in the next installment. According to them, we will learn more about the history of Upside Down and its lore. They also teased there might be a time jump. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next!

When will Stranger Things 5 be released?

Well, that all depends on when the season begins filming. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production of the fourth season was delayed massively. As a result, the release date – which was previously rumored to be January 2021 – was pushed back to May 2022.

Filming on Stranger Things 4 wrapped in August/September 2021, and the first seven episodes were released 9 months later.

We’ll know more once production begins on season 5. The good news is that the Duffer brothers already know what’s going to happen in the story, but with filming and editing, it’s possible that fans might not see Stranger Things 5 until late 2023 at the earliest. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take as long as last time!

Is Stranger Things season 5 the last season?

Although we’re excited to get more episodes of Stranger Things with season 5, the sad news is that it will mark the end of the series. Check out the announcement from the Duffer Brothers below, where they also tease the possibility of spinoffs. It doesn’t look like this universe is going anywhere anytime soon!

Yes. Stranger Things season 5 will be the final season of the show, but it won’t be the end of the Stranger Things universe.

In a statement discussing the future of the franchise and the season 4 release date, the Duffer brothers said: “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.”

In an interview with Collider, David Harbour also said that season 4 lays the groundwork for the ending of the show: “We’re introducing new stuff, but we’re also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction. To make it have a clear, clean, specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can’t really talk about.”

Is Stranger Things season 5 filming?

Stranger Things season 5 has not yet started filming, but that isn’t any reason for concern. The final two episodes of Stranger Things season 4 aren’t even out yet, so we’ll likely have some time before production on the next installment begins.

The interesting thing here is that some of the stars of the show are pretty busy with other acting gigs. For instance, Millie Bobby Brown is set to star in a new Netflix movie called The Electric State, which has not started filming yet. As we previously reported, principal photography on the Russo Brothers film will start this October in Atlanta, Georgia.

Producer Shawn Levy also told Collider in a separate interview that he and the Duffer brothers have the end in sight: “There is a plan and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when season four is coming out, but soon enough.”

He continued: “I can say this. No one’s making it up as we go along and there is an endgame, if you will.”

Will there be a time jump in Stranger Things 5?

As any fan of Stranger Things will know, every starts with a little bit of a time jump. The timeline jumped from November/December 1983 in season 1 to October 1984 in season 2, and then to July 1985 in season 3. Season 4 takes place in March 1986, eight months after the Battle of Starcourt.

Additionally, Finn Wolfhard’s next Ghostbusters movie just got a release date of Dec. 20, 2023. We’ll be curious to see if these other commitments get in the way of Stranger Things season 5.

But it now seems like season 5 might have an even bigger time jump than usual. The Duffer brothers told TVLine that a lengthy gap is almost unavoidable because of the ages of the younger actors: “I’m sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that.”

There’s no confirmation what year season 5 will take place in just yet, but if the show goes beyond March 1988 then it could coincide with the release of Beetlejuice which, of course, stars the real life superstar Winona Ryder.

How many episodes will Stranger Things 5 have?

We’ll have to wait for confirmation about the length of season 5, but considering seasons 1 and 3 had 8 episodes, and seasons 2 and 4 had nine episodes, season 5 will likely be around the same length. It all depends on how much story the Duffer brothers want to tell in the final season.

There’s also no word on season 5’s episode runtimes just yet either. But here’s hoping they’re just as long as season 4!

Stranger Things 5 cast: Who will return?

Again, we’ll have to wait and see who makes it out of season 4 alive before we can start speculating over which cast members and characters will be back for the final season. (Prayer circle for Steve and Eddie!)

One character that we can low-key count on being in the final season? Joyce Byers. In an interview with MTV UK, Finn Wolfhard revealed the text that Winona Ryder sent him, in which she joked about “her energy for season 5”. Joyce Byers hive, let’s go!

Noah Schnapp has also hinted that Will will be in season 5 as well. While discussing how much he hates Will Byers’ signature bowl cut with Jimmy Fallon, Noah let slip that he’ll be back next season after revealing that the Duffer brothers told him to “get ready for season 5 because [the bowlcut] is not going away!”
