The original Fallout protagonist has gone unnoticed over the years, but new art being used in advertisements has brought him back with a modern polish. Albert Cole was the main character in the first Fallout game and had largely vanished until some recent promotional artwork for the Fallout series.
Fallout 76 used concept and promotional art similar to previous titles like Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas before its release but placed far less emphasis on the original titles or the Tactics spin-off. An eagle-eyed Reddit user shared a cropped image from the Fallout 25th-anniversary art being used in social media ads for Fallout 76, emphasizing Albert Cole’s role in the scene.
In the screenshot, the original Fallout protagonist is flanked by other notable franchise mainstays such as one of the powerful mutants, a Fallout 1 villain, and a robot that has appeared over the generations of titles.
In the screenshot shared by the user, Albert is flipping different types of meat on a barbecue while wearing his signature Vault 13 jumpsuit and a white Vault-Tec cooking apron that keeps the blue and yellow clean.
Two German Shepherd dogs wait in front of the barbeque Albert is standing at, possibly about another fan-favorite Fallout character named Dogmeat, while a Super Mutant and The Master lurk in the background. Another Vault survivor poses with their glasses to the side of the Fallout 76 image containing Albert, with Fallout 4 companion Piper Wright by his side, and an Eye Bot floats around in the background.
Recent Fallout titles followed nuclear war survivors such as Courier 6, the Lone Wanderer, and the Sole Survivor, each with their unique take on the post-apocalyptic setting. The original Fallout games are very different from the genre reboot that began with Fallout 3, and as a result, many of the characters from the first titles have died off since 2008. As a result, Bethesda Softworks hasn’t made many references to Albert Cole, and the Fallout promotional art breaks this long-standing tradition by putting him front and center.
Lamenting the fact that the Albert Cole in the Fallout 25th-anniversary artwork still has all of his limbs, the top response to a Reddit post suggested that an arm be swapped for a chainsaw, similar to Ash Williams from Evil Dead. One fan was surprised to see The Master among the likes of Wright and Cole, pointing out the absurdity of Fallout heroes and villains mingling in the promotional art.
