Face it: you’ll never, ever obtain that Taylor Swift special Record Store Day release that’s out today. Fifty million Swift fans can’t be wrong, and around a tenth of them appear determined to obtain the 10,000 copies of a 7-inch single of “The Lakes” that will be available at indie stores today as part of the annual music geek holiday.
Actually, “on sale” may be a bit of a misnomer, since many retailers have opted to have raffles later in the day for the handful of copies that they each got in (if any at all), which does serve the function of alleviating the public’s distress over not receiving a book.
But try to maintain some zen calm, and remember that this specific two-sided single is already online and may be streamed. (Yes, on Record Store Day, they are treasonous words.)
However, if you were intending on purchasing Swift’s single for a loved one, why not consider one of the 300-plus choices that are also available for RSD today as a consolation prize? How excited would your daughter be to receive the new five-LP boxed collection from avant-jazz great Albert Ayler when you come home?
To soothe the sorrows of a dissatisfied aunt, how about Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett’s new solo EP? Cypress Hill’s “420 Remixes,” Dio’s “Double Dose of Donington,” a five-disc Dead live performance, or a little Gong, L.A. Guns, or Golden Smog may be exactly what your Swiftie grandfather needs to make him smile.
But, in all seriousness, consider some of these 2022 highlights, none of which will start a raffle but are all worth your money before they, too, run out of stock. RSD is a deep lake to plunge into, as it usually is.
(Note: Some of the titles planned for this Record Store Day cycle, such as Pearl Jam, Prince, and Miles Davis, have been postponed and will be released as part of an additional RSD event on June 18.)
