The iPhone 14 may include a new emergency texting capability that allows you to stay connected even if cellular networks are unavailable. Instead, Apple is looking into ways to allow future iPhones to link to satellite networks so that you may text emergency services if you’re in distress in a remote location.
If this reported feature seems familiar, it’s because rumours of iPhone satellite connectivity originally surfaced last summer, right around the time the iPhone 13 was released. In such stories, it was also described how the iPhone could connect to satellite networks in the event of an emergency.
That was clearly not the case with the iPhone 13, which was released in September. However, the satellite communication idea has persisted, with sources as recent as March claiming that Apple would include the technology in this fall’s iPhones.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is the latest to resurrect speculation of a satellite connectivity feature for the iPhone 14, mentioning it in an article that’s mostly focused on the Apple Watch and the possibility of a new health sensor coming to the Apple Watch 8.
Gurman goes into detail about additional forthcoming Apple Watch functions at the end of the piece, including the rumored capacity to transmit emergency test messages through satellite networks.
“Apple is also trying to introduce satellite connectivity to the Apple Watch in the future,” Gurman writes, “laying the groundwork for emergency texting and SOS response functions.” “It plans to deliver those capabilities on iPhone as soon as this year,” says the source.

If this is correct, the iPhone 14 will be able to connect to satellite networks when cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. It’s unclear whether this function will be available on all new Apple phones or will be confined to the iPhone 14 Pro models, which appear to be getting the most major updates this autumn.
As previously stated in prior publications, satellite connectivity would not be suitable for activities such as web browsing or video streaming.
