Combat in The Last of Us is stressful and scary, and the game is known for its grim narrative. The story was continued in the sequel, with a few plot twists along the way. While playing through the two games and following Joel, Ellie, and Abby’s tales, players undoubtedly experienced a wide range of various emotions.
That being said, Ellie and Abby were finally at peace with one another in The Last of Us Part 2, and both characters were going their separate ways. Even if the revenge plot on both sides has effectively been put to rest, it is unknown whether Ellie and Abby will once again serve as the series’ protagonists or whether other characters should take the lead.
Both Ellie and Abby have seen their fair share of retribution by the time The Last of Us Part 2’s harrowing narrative comes to a close, and players might picture both characters as damaged and defeated as a result. Ironically, Abby would have most likely perished at the hands of the Rattlers if Ellie had not made an effort to find her, therefore Ellie decided to abandon her family in a last-ditch effort to exact retribution.
Ellie eventually gains the upper hand during their final confrontation and has the chance to finally murder Abby and exact revenge on Joel. Ellie decides not to kill Abby out of mercy and perhaps because she has finally realized that doing so won’t help her get well.
The final time the game’s audience sees Abby and Lev, they are securely on a boat, sailing away from land in search of additional Fireflies. The title screen of the game changes once the player completes it, and it implies that the two have arrived at their destination, even though it is unknown if there are any other Fireflies.
After everything is over, the main menu shows the boat the two escaped on beached close to a structure that resembled Santa Catalina, the place where the Fireflies claimed to be stationed at the time they told Abby. The Fireflies may still be there, but players might assume that Abby and Lev arrived at their destination without incident.
Ellie, on the other hand, did not have as good luck; when she goes back to Dina and JJ, she discovers that their former house has been abandoned and that all of her stuff is still in her room. She tries to play her guitar but is unable to do so because she lost several fingers in the altercation with Abby. Ellie, who is frustrated and alone, leaves her home to look for her family or perhaps to rediscover herself.
The stories of both the protagonists are left unresolved after The Last of Us Part 2. Although both feel fulfilled with their searches for retribution, their adventures go on as they attempt to start new lives.
