Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe covered a great deal of ground in a short volume of time. When Kevin Feige announced the new Phase, H Hall, at Comic-Con 2019, these new shows and movies are set to fill the void left by titles like Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, The. Falcon and winter soldier and hockey.
During the new phase, Marvel presented brand new characters with rich historical and mythological stories to explore and enrich the expanding universe. Newcomers like Simo Liu, Iman Velani, and Socitile Gomez bring lesser-known Marvel heroes into the spotlight in exciting new ways. The fun doesn’t stop there – Phase 4 features stars like Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, and Harry Styles.
With five movies and six series on Disney Plus so far, viewers have traveled through time and diversity. Only on Earth-616 did we travel from New Jersey to Egypt and from Madripura to London.
The fictions told are intricate and complex, exploring themes of grief, mental illness, and family trauma. (Who says theme park movies can’t be serious?) With each new title, there’s a familiarity to their stories that makes you feel like you know them and their world. What makes Phase 4 so persistent is also its weakness – while the new and old characters are equally immersive, the vast world these characters inhabit feels isolated and disconnected.
The Craze for Marvel Fans is Grading Down
For over a decade, Marvel Studios has created an identity for itself with its film franchise, creating a cinematic world for its characters to exist in and interact with. From Iron Man to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Empire continued its never-ending saga by combining stories and characters leading to a record-breaking climax. Starting with six characters, they formed the Avengers team. From there, they added characters like Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), where Thanos (Josh Brolin) is waiting to present their fiction as part of the Infinity War plot. The titan-sized opening in the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame is too enormous to disregard.
You can’t play it right away. You have to work up to this level again. Based on what we’ve seen so far in Phase 4, the stakes range from small to multiverse in size, and there’s an obvious threat or villain on the way. All character lives in their bubble (or gender if you prefer) with minimal overlap.
Are they able to produce what Audience wants??
For example, Moon Knight is a six-part series that introduces Mark Spector’s Oscar Isaac to the MCU. He has split identity disorder with multiple personalities. Whereas the show itself is a wonderful study of this new character (and deserves a life of its own), the aftermath of the show has little bearing on the larger story of the MCU.
