Bethesda confirms Deathloop Takes Place In The Dishonored Universe

Dinga Bakaba, the game’s director, has confirmed that Deathloop takes place in the Dishonored universe, far in the future after the events of the Death of the Outsider DLC. As many people are aware, Deathloop, which is now available on Xbox Series X/S, raises as many questions as it answers.

This discovery comes at an interesting time. Not only is Deathloop getting a lot of attention with the release of Xbox Game Pass and the new Golden Loop update, but many Arkane fans are also getting ready to celebrate the Dishonored franchise’s release. After all, Dishonored was released ten years ago on October 9th (two days after this article was published). Replaying these games is a great way to commemorate the occasion, but diving into Deathloop and looking for references to them is also a good idea.

In any case, this revelation came during Larry Grib’s official Xbox podcast, better known as Major Nelson. Jeff Rubenstein asked Bakaba if the two games were related, noting that there are speculations throughout Deathloop that she is related to Dishonored due to a hidden song and a few other hints. Bakaba explicitly stated that the events of Deathloop are what Arkane envisions happening long after the events of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider.

There are numerous video game theories available. For example, I believe Nathan Drake’s “treasure hunting” in The Last of Us triggered the virus. While that is not gaining traction, another popular theory has recently been confirmed. Deathloop, it turns out, is set in the same universe as Dishonored.

Arkane Studio’s creative director Dinga Bakaba confirmed what many players already suspected in the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast. When the host inquired about the link between the two games, Bakaba explained that due to the various systems in Deathloop, “not everyone has seen the same thing,” or even every room in the game. Despite this, he claims that the game’s community picked up on hints that Deathloop and Dishonored were linked.

He went on to say that the two are part of the same universe. Arkane “envisioned Deathloop to take place in the future after Death of the Outsider.”

While the developer added an interesting little thread to the game, Deathloop is still meant to stand on its own. As a result, it is not immediately obvious when playing the time-bending shooter that the worlds are the same. That’s a relief because I didn’t notice the connections while playing the game. While the hints about the connection are subtle – perhaps not subtle enough, given that everyone else picked up on it – they are there.
