Players of Overwatch 2 have noticed that Echo, the final addition to the original Overwatch cast, has been overlooked in several aspects. Players of Overwatch 2 are finding evidence that suggests Blizzard could have forgotten about Echo after the sequel’s free-to-play launch. Possibly not every Overwatch 2 player is familiar with Echo.
After the team shooter’s player peak, the robot was the final character to be added to the original Overwatch. Additionally, Echo was released in 2020, which is another reason why Overwatch gamers could not have encountered her. It’s less clear why Blizzard itself would have overlooked or rejected Echo.
Undoubtedly, Echo is still a playable character in Overwatch 2. Her whole collection of modifications and cosmetics has been completely maintained and carried over to the new game. Echo has not been completely removed from Overwatch 2. Instead, Overwatch 2 gamers have observed that Echo has been excluded from some upgrades given to other characters in the new game.
Echo’s image is one instance where players noticed she seemed to have gone unnoticed. While upgrading to Overwatch 2, Blizzard decided to change the faces of each character from 3D symbols to 2D graphics. Echo’s 3D rendered portrait remains her Overwatch 2 portrait icon. Blizzard has not said why they chose to alter the image, making it even more difficult to understand why Echo’s portrait was not updated while every other Overwatch character was.
Players have observed that Echo’s portrait is one area where she appears to have been overlooked. Blizzard decided to switch each character’s portrait from a 3D icon to a 2D piece of art for Overwatch 2. Overwatch 2 continues to display Echo’s 3D rendered portrait as her symbol. It’s more challenging to comprehend why Echo’s portrait wasn’t changed while every other Overwatch character did because Blizzard hasn’t given any indication of their decision to alter the artwork.
The second absence concerns Echo’s Overwatch 2 default skin, which is possibly the more important one. In particular, Echo lacks an “Overwatch 2” skin that is set as her default. Instead, she is dressed in her normal “Overwatch 1” skin.
For Overwatch 2, the base skins of all the original Overwatch heroes were modified. These skins, at the very least, have minor color or texture adjustments. With Blizzard promising more in the future, certain default skins have undergone a complete overhaul. None of this reached Echo.
There are several valid reasons why Blizzard ignored these details while focusing on Overwatch 2. After all, development resources are constrained, and Blizzard faced a tight deadline for the release of Overwatch 2 PvP. How come Echo becomes the focus?
It’s likely that Blizzard just sorted characters by popularity and deprioritized Echo’s work because of her game’s delayed release. Perhaps Blizzard decided it wanted developers to work on something else instead of spending time on her, or maybe she was even forgotten. It certainly doesn’t help that Echo is presently not very well balanced for the 5v5 gameplay in Overwatch 2. Regardless, Blizzard has to resolve the problems quickly, if only to dispel claims that Overwatch 2 was rushed and incomplete.
