Joe Montana, real name Joseph Clifford Montana, also known by the nicknames Joe Cool and the Comeback Kid, was a legendary quarterback in the National Football League who played on American football’s gridiron. He was born on June 11, 1956, in New Eagle, Pennsylvania.

Montana was three times named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and guided the San Francisco 49ers to four championships (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990). In terms of passing yards (40,551) and touchdown passes, he is also among the all-time leaders in football. When his team was on the verge of losing a game, Montana was known for his ability to calmly pull them back and win it, earning the moniker “Joe Cool.”

In high school, Montana excelled at football, basketball, and baseball. He was raised in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. He was given the chance to attend North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, on a basketball scholarship, but he chose to play collegiate football at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
Third-string quarterback for the Fighting Irish to start his junior year, Montana was promoted to starter after coming off the bench to lead Notre Dame to a comeback victory in the third game of the 1977 campaign. His final act that year was leading Notre Dame, who had previously lost, to the Division I-A national championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Midway during his second season with the 49ers in San Francisco
Montana was elevated to the starting position. He was a perfect fit for head coach Bill Walsh’s “West Coast offense,” which centered on a series of quick, accurate passes to advance the ball downfield. In January 1982, Montana guided the 49ers to their first Super Bowl triumph, winning game MVP honors in the process. In the National Football Conference championship game, Montana’s team’s playoff run was highlighted by a game-winning touchdown pass to Dwight Clark with 51 seconds left; this play became known as “The Catch.”
In 1985, after defeating the Miami Dolphins, the 49ers won their second Super Bowl championship (and Montana earned his second MVP award). The following spring, the 49ers selected wide receiver Jerry Rice, who for six seasons formed one of the most successful passing combinations in NFL history with Montana.
Montana directed a thrilling late-game drive in 1989 to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals and win a third Super Bowl. Despite Walsh’s retirement in the off-season, the 49ers won the Super Bowl the following year by the largest margin of victory in the game’s history (45 points), and Montana won his third MVP award.
In 1989 and 1990, Montana won the NFL MVP award in addition to other postseason honors.
The 1991 and 1992 seasons saw Montana miss
All but one game due to an elbow injury, and by the time he was ready to play again, future Hall of Famer Steve Young had already established himself as the 49ers’ starter. Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993.
In his first season in Kansas City, he was selected to his eighth and final Pro Bowl, and during his two seasons with the team, he helped the Chiefs reach the postseason. With 31 fourth-quarter comeback victories and 10 playoff victories to his name, Montana retired in 1995.
