Since the epidemic hit two years ago, the Boston region has seen the closure of renowned music venues. However, in Allston-Brighton tonight, a new club opens, and it’s a huge one.

The Roadrunner is said to be New England’s largest indoor general admission arena. We went on a tour to see how and why the Roadrunner team created it to be a better experience for both audiences and musicians.

It might be crazy when you enter a music venue. In a herd of exuberant people, you often wind yourself rambling through tiny halls to get to the stage from the box office. One of the first things you notice when you arrive at Roadrunner is this.

Reid Calkin, the house audio technician, stood alone on the arena-sized stage, which is 60 feet wide, on a recent afternoon. The club’s cutting-edge sound system had just been installed a few days prior.

“Check one, check two,” he said softly, before adding, “Welcome.” It’s my first time speaking via the PA, and I’m really enjoying it.”

“Just hearing the PA switch on — hearing the sound come through — it’s like being a proud dad,” Josh Bhatti smiled.

Bhatti has been in charge of Roadrunner’s construction since the beginning. He is the Boston office manager for The Bowery Presents, a New York-based organization that also owns and bookings the Sinclair and the Royale. Bhatti explained that they had been looking for a new venue with the capacity to increase their musical footprint.
