Gloop. Guts. Even though brave schoolchildren who should be doing their homework or running a paper route instead are hacking off the tentacles of enormous, horrifying creatures from other realms, who else is going to save the world? All of the neighborhood rats suddenly glow in the dark, but it’s not the government, the military, and most definitely not the sketchy experimental lab on the outskirts of town…
Super 8
Super 8 was the first 2010s love letter to Steven Spielberg’s Spielbergian ’80s films, released before Stranger Things. The everyman sheriff from Jaws (Kyle Chandler), the bunch of E.T.-like boys getting on their bikes to deal with the dual perils of aliens and hostile government agencies, and everything else in J.J. Abrams’ film are all imitations.
Even to the point that it begins to appear derivative, the film “honors” Spielberg’s love of lens flare. Even so, Abrams creates a charming coming-of-age tale about a young boy named Joe (Joel Courtney) who, like Abrams and Spielberg, deals with his insecurities by making Super 8 films in his backyard.
This is especially true considering that the boy’s father, the sheriff, barely has time for him now that the boy’s mother has passed away.
The Fades
Yes, the entire cast of Stranger Things has charm in spades but does it also have, to mention a few, Daniel Get Out Kaluuya, Tom Lucifer Ellis, Natalie Dormer, Joe Game of Thrones Dempsie, and Iain Agents of Shield de Caestecker? There isn’t. Both a superb speech about the Hertfordshire town of Stevenage and scripts by renowned screenwriter Jack His Dark Materials Thorne are absent from Stranger Things.
No, of course not. The spooky fantasy series The Fades is indisputably British, right down to the agonizing fact that season one, which only had six episodes, was canceled. In contrast, Stranger Things is as American as apple pie. A high school student has initiated into the cosmic secret that the dead are alive and well in this 2011 horror film.
Sweet Home
The end of the world doesn’t just hit Hawkins, Indiana. In the Netflix original series Sweet Home, which is based on the hugely famous webcomic by Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan, Cha Hyun-South soo’s Korean hometown is similarly in danger of the end of the world. A pair of fantasy monsters bent on eradicating humanity show up just as he moves into his first apartment.
Cha Hyun-soo must figure out who to trust and how to survive when his building is under quarantine and horrific illnesses are sweeping through his neighbors. Following the huge Korean hits Squid Game and Hellbound (see below), this 10-episode virus thriller/survival horror was launched on Netflix and has already been extended for a further two seasons. Expect blood, CGI creatures, and some Stranger Things-Esque scenes.
The Faculty
The Faculty, Robert Rodriguez’s fourth movie released in 1998, is a fun homage to 1950s man vs monster pictures like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing. The slogan for this underappreciated teen film, which stars Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Famke Janssen, Robert Patrick, Usher, Jon Stewart, and Elijah Wood, should be “Body Snatchers meets high school.”
An unexpected alliance between popular kids, nerds, and misfits is all that stands between these monstrous invaders and the rest of their Ohio town when alien parasites start infecting instructors at Herrington High School and taking over their bodies. Stay for the delightfully relatable humor; come for the teen angst.
