Early life
Tommy Morrison, an American boxer who became world heavyweight champion in 1993, has died at the age of 44.Morrison, whose real name was Tommy Eugene Morrison, was born in Jay, Oklahoma, on January 2, 1969.
He started practising boxing very early in his childhood. At just 9 he began training in boxing and at 18 fought his first professional bout. He is the nephew of Hollywood legend star John Wayne, he chose his father and grandfather footsteps of boxing as he was already famous because of his father’s fame in the boxing career.
Boxing career
Boxers started getting fame after their first fight or by their records but Morrison was already famous even before his professional fight. From 1985-1988, as per records he won a total of 290 fights in which 21 losses are also included.
An amazing fact was that he won 263 fights by knockout. Later he fought with Ray Meror for the Olympic trials and wasn’t able to make it. He also acted in famous movie series ROCKY in the fifth part.
Down fall of Tommy morrison
After the loss, his life became hell as he was introduced to drugs by his friends and it affected its boxing career a lot. People started calling him womaniser as he was so much indulged in sex life. Truly, the friend he have makes his life hell and his downfall started in boxing career.
He won the world heavyweight title in 1993 with a technical knockout of George Foreman. And eventually, in the same year lost title as he couldn’t able to defend the title against Michael Moorer. After 3 years of his title loss it was found that Tommy Morrison was HIV positive and ultimately had to retire from boxing.
As per shocking revelation it was mentioned that he was HIV positive already in 1989 and this information was hidden from everyone. Later all the treatment was done under special doctors and again he tried to come back to the boxing profession from where he left his journey.
He made a comeback in 2006 but lost his only fight.Morrison won his first 26 fights before suffering his first loss to Michael Bentt in 1992. After the Bentt loss, Morrison went on to win four more fights before being KO’d by George Foreman in 1993.
In 1994, Morrison made a comeback and won the WBO heavyweight title with a TKO victory over Tommy Holyfield.After the Lewis loss, Morrison continued to fight until he was diagnosed with HIV in 1996.Morrison retired from boxing after the HIV diagnosis but made a brief comeback in 2006-2007.
He retired for good after losing to Johnathon Banks in 2012.Morrison’s cause of death has not been released, but it is believed that he died from complications related to AIDS.
