Career

NBC Sports (2016–present) On May 9, 2016, it was officially announced that Mike Tirico would join NBC Sports on July 1, 2016, following a leak from the previous month. On June 30, 2016, Tirico made his final appearance on ESPN, concluding that day’s coverage of the UEFA Euro 2016 soccer tournament.

During the 2016 Open Championship, Tirico made his debut as a play-by-play announcer for the first three hours of coverage of the first and second rounds on NBC’s Golf Channel. On Thursday and Friday afternoons, Tirico assumed the role of studio host, and over the weekend, he hosted all of the coverage on NBC itself.

Tirico contributed to NBC’s August broadcasts of the 2016 Summer Olympics from Rio de Janeiro as a studio host. Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch suggested that Tirico might take over for Bob Costas as the primetime host of NBC’s Olympics coverage.

Following the 2014 Winter Olympics, NBC Sports chairman Mark Lazarus stated that the division had begun to “think about what life after Bob might be, whether post-Rio, post-Pyeongchang, post-Tokyo, whenever he does not want to do it anymore.” This explanation came after the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Deitsch was also of the opinion that Tirico’s radio experience might enable him to contribute to the network of NBC Sports Radio. In the beginning, Sports Business Journal stated that Tirico was likely to succeed Al Michaels as the lead play-by-play announcer for Thursday Night Football, which was moving to NBC for the upcoming season.

Later, the NFL stated that NBC had to use its primary play-by-play commentator for all primetime broadcasts as part of its contract with the network. Due to Hicks’ conflicts with his lead play-by-play role on NBC’s golf coverage, including the 2016 Ryder Cup, Tirico was placed on play-by-play for NBC’s first three Notre Dame college football games.

Tirico also called the two preseason games that were assigned to NBC. Together with Hicks, Tirico would host Sunday coverage of the event.

Tilico was used in two late-season games of the Thursday Night Football package produced for the NFL Network. These games were played on Saturday and Christmas Sunday respectively, and Tirico had Doug Flutie and Tony Dungy in both games.

NBC has more NFL work, so Michael was asking for time off. Bob Costas announced on February 9, 2017, that he will be retiring as primetime host of his NBC coverage of the Olympics and will be replaced by Tillico from the 2018 USA Winter Olympics and he will be taking his place from NFL coverage.

In 2017, Mike Tillico took over the role of Tom His Hammond in coverage of the Triple Crown and Notre Dame, where he became a full-time play-by-play announcer for football. On May 31, 2017, it was announced that Tillico would replace Al Michaels asplay-by-play commentator for all Thursday night football games on NBC.

Tirico didn’t go to Super Bowl LII because he wanted to focus on preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics, which started on Friday. Tirico was assigned to NBC’s Thanksgiving Day game during the 2018 NFL season, along with teammates Tony Dungey and Rodney Harrison, after Thursday night’s loss to Fox. named his two NFL Network special games produced by Fox Sports.

Tirico announced on February 20, 2019, on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Hockey between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Reds that he called his NHL game his first for the Wings, with Eddie Olczyk and Brian Boucher as his commentators.
