What I’m getting at is that studying medicine can take an extremely long period. Before you commit years of your life (and potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars) to pursue a career in medicine, you must understand what you’re getting yourself into beforehand. A medical internship is one method of accomplishing this goal.
Medical internships for high school students provide you with the opportunity to learn about various disciplines and specialties of medicine through job shadowing and hands-on experiences before deciding whether or not to pursue a pre-medical degree.

This conference brings together students from all around the country. If you wish to pursue a career in medicine or health care in the future, the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) on Medicine and Health Care is an excellent opportunity to get a feel for your chosen field.
The nine-day training will include hands-on learning experiences such as suturing, vital sign checks, and recognizing cranial nerves, among other things. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet and learn from medical professionals, as well as take behind-the-scenes tours of some of the country’s most exciting cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
2. National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program for High School Students
A career in biomedical research is something you should consider. Consider applying for the National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program for high school students (HS-SIP). The HS-SIP, which is open to high school students aged 17 and older, is a paid internship program that provides students with the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most accomplished scientists.
A summer internship at a biomedical research lab or within a research group will provide you with hands-on experience in the field of biomedical research. Recommendation: Start brushing up on your chemical and biology knowledge; you’ll need it later.
3. Museum Disease Detective Camp sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Do you want to make your pre-med CV stand out above a sea of other candidates? Demonstrating that you participated in a CDC program is guaranteed to get you the job. Disease Detective Camp, offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a five-day program that introduces students to a variety of issues connected to public health, including disease surveillance, disaster preparedness, and more.
Although there is no tuition to attend, the program is extremely competitive. To increase your chances of being accepted, submit your application as soon as possible and include a stellar recommendation from a teacher.
4. Summer Medical Academy
The Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego (RCHSD) Summer Medical Academy is a hallmark internship program that gives high school students a unique opportunity to pursue a variety of jobs in the healthcare field.
During this two-week program, you will learn about major issues in medicine from seasoned healthcare experts and gain hands-on experience by participating in a variety of clinics throughout the city. As a bonus, you’ll be able to do all of this while visiting San Diego. What’s better than beautiful beaches and mouth-watering tacos? Please accept my request.
5. Medical Immersion Summer Academy (MISA)
MISA is a summer program for medical students. The Medical Immersion Summer Academy (MISA), which is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is another program that will look great on a pre-med résumé. This week-long program, which is geared toward high school students, provides hands-on learning experiences in a range of health-care settings, allowing them to put their chosen profession to the test.
All 9th through 12th-grade students, including those living outside of the Bay Area, are encouraged to apply. Although it is not a cheap program ($1,250 per student), it may provide you with a competitive advantage when it comes time to apply to medical school.
6. Stanford Medical Youth Science Program
Do you have your heart set on attending Stanford University School of Medicine? SMYSP (Stanford Medical Youth Science Program) can give you a taste of what it’s like to be a Stanford student while also assisting you in exploring a medical career path.
During this five-week program, you will participate in workshops with Stanford medical students, listen to faculty lectures, work in laboratories and hospitals, and receive college admissions counseling, among other activities and experiences.
7. Children’s Hospital Colorado Summer Internship
If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in pediatrics, the Children’s Hospital Colorado Summer Internship should be at the top of your list of medical internship possibilities to consider this summer.
This nine-week program, designed for high school seniors, allows you to learn about many fields of research in children’s health, such as nutrition, neuroscience, hematology, and stem cell research, all while earning academic credits. After the program, you will take part in a research presentation and give an oral or PowerPoint summary of your findings.
