Since Jimmy began Series 6 by burying his mother and had to accept the truth that he was losing his father to dementia as the show continued, Jimmy was influenced by BBC One’s earlier journey to Shetland. While Cassie stayed on the mainland, Jimmy was left alone and struggled to stop pal Duncan from being swayed by the reappearance of an ex-girlfriend and murderer Donna Killick.
The Retaliation of Donna Killick
As revealed in Series 4, 20 years ago, Donna killed 18-year-old Lizzie Kilmuir to keep her from telling her violent husband that she was having an affair with Duncan (resulting in the birth of their now-adult son Alan). Donna allowed an innocent man to receive a death sentence for her crime and spend 20 years in jail before her guilt was made public.
To the dismay of the islanders, not least of whom was Kate, the sister of Donna’s victim Lizzie Kilmuir, Donna was relocated to the island of Shetland after receiving a fatal cancer diagnosis. When she visited the island to spend her final days after being released from prison, the locals’ disapproval and animosity were warranted. As neighbors’ rage increased in the wake of press revelations of crime scene photos of Lizzie’s death, Kate Kilmuir organized a campaign to have Donna transferred.
Sandy being revealed as the Leak
Whom did the photographs of the crime scene come from? DC Sandy Wilson has affection for Kate and wants to help her in her anti-Donna campaign. Sandy, who had once been friends with Lizzie, harboured his own resentment toward her killer. After discovering from Donnie that he was the one who leaked the information, Sandy consented to come clean to Jimmy when Tosh approached him. Tosh put Sandy off, claiming that the time wasn’t right, after Duncan was caught in the series finale. Sandy’s conduct has gone unnoticed thus far.
Duncan and Jimmy Were Framed
Duncan was Jimmy’s biggest worry in the Series 6 finale. When Jimmy first advised him to be cautious around Donna, he had been correct. Donna came back to carry out a plan of vengeance against Jimmy and Duncan, whom she believed were to blame for learning of her crime. However, only after falsely accusing Duncan in a letter to her attorney of planning to kill her in just that way and having Jimmy cover it up, did she lure Duncan into helping her take a calculated deadly overdose.
Jimmy made an effort to help Duncan cover up his assisted suicide crime, despite the fact that Donna’s letter was ultimately shown to be a total forgery. When Jimmy saw Duncan with Donna’s body, he realized what Duncan had done and persuaded him to put the overdose mug Donna had used in the sink so there would be a reason for it to have Duncan’s fingerprints on it.
