Along with Taron Edgerton’s surprisingly sophisticated American accent and some clever dialogue, the actor’s six-pack and other well-toned body parts are one of the first things you’ll notice while watching Blackbird.
Never one to back down from a challenge, did Edgerton go naked or did he use a body double, as many of his celebrity friends do in these kinds of scenes?
Taron Egerton made a surprising choice for the six-episode miniseries Black Bird, which was based on Hillel Levin’s prison memoir In With the Devil and written by James Keene. Egerton had already impressed us with his performance in the Elton John biopic.
Egerton decided to play an ex-star athlete who is now convicted of drug trafficking and asked to get a confession from a suspected serial killer because he wanted to do something different. Is it sufficiently dark? It gets darker, so much so that Dennis Lehane, who developed, wrote, and executive produced the show, wept while writing one of the episodes.
Taron Egerton had to significantly bulk up for the role of James Keene, a very masculine and selfish character, and then keep it that way throughout the agonizing six months of shooting in New Orleans, working long hours and late at night. It paid off, and not in the wrong way: In one of Black Bird Episode 1’s opening scenes, you can’t help but try to count how many abs the actor has.
But one of the best parts of the first episode is a hot and steamy sex scene in which Egerton’s character is completely naked and shows the camera every part of his body below his back, which is full of muscle.
Naturally, fans of Egerton couldn’t help but wonder if the actor actually had a muscled back and the other parts of his body, or if it was a body double whose buttocks we have to watch moving quite enthusiastically for a few minutes in that sex scene.
It turns out that it wasn’t a body double but rather Egerton in all his muscled-up glory. The actor is no stranger to intimate scenes in movies and television shows. After all, Rocketman (2019) features a gay sex scene with Richard Madden and a shower scene with Egerton in which he is once more shown naked and facing the camera. Black Bird, on the other hand, is without a doubt the most daring or explicit – pick your preference.
The show first aired on July 8 and is currently available to watch on Apple TV Plus. Black Bird is absolutely worth watching, and not just for the sexy scenes with Taron Egerton: Apple’s most recent psychological thriller is already being hailed as one of the best-limited series of the year, receiving a score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
