Project Scorpio Should Bring 4k Enthusiasts to Console Gaming, Says Microsoft

Microsoft’s Project Scoripio still remains a mystery after Microsoft officially announced the details at E3 2016. While the Xbox One S quickly took attention for the mean time due to its prior release, Microsoft’s Project Scorpio is one console that Microsoft wants enthusiasts to lurk on.

Both of the consoles Microsoft announced at E3 brought meaningful improvements to gain their attention with the Xbox One S focusing on bringing a smaller, yet attractive Xbox One S with 4k playback capabilities. While some can argue about the performance improvements of the Xbox One S, the Xbox One S just helped the Xbox One stabilize the frame rates until now.

Next, for Project Scorpio, Microsoft announced that Project Scorpio is one of their more enthusiast-focused consoles bringing true 4k gaming with 6TFLOPs of power under the hood. After that, nothing much was revealed from Microsoft or even AMD in regards to the pricing and other details. However, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer did confirm that Project Scorpio has already reached some developers.

In a recent conversation at Gamescom, DualShockers confirms their talk with Xbox’s Game Marketing Head, Aaron Greenberg, he says:

“We were really thoughtful about the specs we used to design Project Scorpio, and the focus was on how can we deliver true 4K gaming in the console space. And you’re right. Today 4K gaming exists on the PC, with people who spend a lot of money on super high-end PCs with a wide variety of specs… Thousands of dollars in many cases can get 4K gaming, but it hasn’t existed in the console market.

How can we bring that at scale to a really big audience in the console space, is what I’m excited about. To be able to bring six teraFLOPS of GPU power to the console space, is a massive amount of power.

We’re confident that we’ll be able to deliver true 4K gaming with that, and that performance power is gonna bring great games to our fans in the console market.

A lot of those developers that are building those games today, are already doing 4K on PC. Our internal studios… We got Forza Horizon 3, Halo Wars 2, Gears of War 4, all being built today as great graphical showcases on the PC, and so that work is already existing, but the performance power is not there yet in the console space, and we’ll obviously be bringing that next year.”

Additionally, DualShockers also confirmed with Aaron Greenberg that Microsoft’s Project Scorpio is intended as a premium product unlike the traditional pricing of the consoles. While that was quite expected for such a leap of power for a console, we were and still are skeptical how low are they going to bring the costs on Project Scorpio, and if they do, it’s pretty obvious of how long this console generation will last, especially considering the clash from Sony’s Playstation Neo as well.

As of right now, it’s pretty obvious that Microsoft isn’t able to accomplish a fixed price point of their console until now, although, there’s still quite some time before its debut in 2017. We just wouldn’t like to speculate the pricing as of this moment. However, if Microsoft really want to attract some 4k enthusiast attention, it’d better be priced under the price of Gaming PCs as most 4k gamers opt for PCs. Well, only time will tell.
